Brian, Ulysses or Reginald?

In DP's family there is a big tradition of naming children after people. I also am named after someone and like it.

So we have 3 possible names for DS:

Brian (my dad who died when I was small)
Ulysses (my best friend who was killed when we were teens)
Reginald (DPs Grandfather who is very very ill and may not meet DC)

Surname is a 'thing' rather than a name (think Road, Garden) and we both agree on a Irish middle name (I'm half Irish)

Opinions if you please?

Sorry don't like any of them.

Aworryingtrend · 07/06/2012 12:26

Do YOU like any of them? If not (and it would be understandable, they are not names which are currently well-used) why not use one or more of them as middle names and just choose a name you and DH like as a first name?

BombasticAghast · 07/06/2012 12:27

DOn't like any of them either.
I can understand why you would like to use Brian but really wouldn't.

StepOutOfSpring · 07/06/2012 12:27

I think the best of those is Brian.

It's due a comeback and it hasn't done Professor Brian Cox any harm!

titchy · 07/06/2012 12:34

Anyone else thinking of Monty Python.....

I'll get my coat.

DialMforMummy · 07/06/2012 12:36

Ulysses or Brian are the least worse.
Elton John's name is Reginald. He changed it. Wise man. Reginald is truly awful. Sorry.

squoosh · 07/06/2012 12:40

Brian Cox is the devil. Don't call your child Brian!

TheRealMrsHannigan · 07/06/2012 12:40

If you absolutely have to use one of those names, you could name DS Reggie (so a very close nod to Reginald, but not using the name proper). It's the nicest way I can think to use any of those names, sorry but none are 'nice' on their own imo, though the sentiment is lovely.

Alternatively, use all three as middle names and pick a lovely first name for DS you both love.

redrubyshoes · 07/06/2012 12:43

Ermmm. I really can't choose between them.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 07/06/2012 12:47

Brian is the least awful of those. Nice idea but not great names.

DarrowbyEightFive · 07/06/2012 12:47

I don't mean to insult the memory of your dad or DP's grandpa, but Brian and Reginald are really not good baby names right now - they sound too old fashioned. People have already mentioned Monty Python and Elton John, and that is really what will spring into people's minds - perhaps not the best start to your baby's life.

Ulysses, on the other hand, is really cool, and has the Irish connection too. What would you use as a NN, though?

TheonlyWayisGerard · 07/06/2012 12:53

Please don't. Use one as a middle name. Brian or Reginald is definitely not due a comeback. He would never be able to spell/pronounce the other and neither would anyone else.

evamummy · 07/06/2012 12:55

I know a Ulysses. I like it - very cool.

I'm not keen on Brian, sorry.

squoosh · 07/06/2012 12:57

Ulysses is a lot to carry around day to day. There aren't any obvious nicknames.

I have to admit I did giggle when I saw the thread title. Brian, Ulysses or Reginald. Brian and Reginald, members of the local rortary club looking askance at being on either side of Ulysses,

MarySA · 07/06/2012 12:58

Sorry I can't even choose which I like best. As they are all dreadful. If you must have one as a middle name but not a first.

Thumbwitch · 07/06/2012 13:03

My Dad's name is Brian and I wouldn't even want to use it.
Ulysses - just no.
Reginald - it's not among the popular comeback names, is it? And Reggie just makes me think of Reggie Kray, which dates me but it's the most obvious connection for me.

Use one of them as a middle name, as has already been suggested, and get a better first name.

underthevalley · 07/06/2012 13:18

In a bizarre way we do like them aworry

DP would want Reggie or Rex (of Harrison) for Reginald. But I sort of like Reggie just as its self real

Darrow not sure what Ulysses nn would be - mine was always known as Themba.

Thanks - except we have nothing else we like/agree on at all.

Oh Rex for Reginald is brilliant.

spongebrainfatpants · 07/06/2012 13:26

Ffs. None of them! Think of the child!

sereneswan · 07/06/2012 16:36

I'm really sorry, but I think they're all awful!

RubberBandit · 07/06/2012 16:51

nn for Ulysses could be Yul (as in Brynner). Not sure it's any better, though.

There are not enough baby brians. Go for it!

Badgerina · 07/06/2012 16:53

All three are really ugly to my ears - sorry!

Sarcalogos · 07/06/2012 16:55

If you must use reggie or Rex.

Brian as a middle name never did dumbedore any harm either!
