Brian, Ulysses or Reginald?

In DP's family there is a big tradition of naming children after people. I also am named after someone and like it.

So we have 3 possible names for DS:

Brian (my dad who died when I was small)
Ulysses (my best friend who was killed when we were teens)
Reginald (DPs Grandfather who is very very ill and may not meet DC)

Surname is a 'thing' rather than a name (think Road, Garden) and we both agree on a Irish middle name (I'm half Irish)

Opinions if you please?

Where do you live? Which do you like? Maybe go for a famous person you admire (pref dead with all the dirt likely to be dug up, dug up already).

I have met a few Ulysses - all French or Irish. They have always caused raised eyebrows (we're in London). Not too keen on Brian or Reg either.

tummytickler · 07/06/2012 17:22

They are all ok!
Ulysses is lovely but not many good nn.
Reginald is also lovely - there are loads of baby Reggies around - it would be nice for one to have a proper name! Rex is a great nn for this.
I know a 5 year old Brian.
My favourite is Reginald, then Ulysses, the Brian. My best friend died when we were 22, and we used his name as ds's mn. I often wish I had used it as a fn - I would like to be able to say it out loud more.

front Cardiff - so may get a few looks with the names.
:D sar

DP doesn't think there would be a problem because according to him we can use any of those names because DS will be mixed race and "black people can get away with names like that without being posh" (he then used himself as an example) Hmm

Really surprised that so many people vetoed Reginald, given that Rex is so popular. It is all from the same Latin root meaning king or kingly. I think it's absolutely fine, and it's one of those names that is rarely used in full anyway.

You can move away from Monty Python by using the spelling Bryan. Seems to make a difference to the name, though I don't know why.

WithACherryOnTop · 07/06/2012 19:29

Reginald is awful, but ok as a middle name.

Brian is fine.

Ulysses. only as a middle name.

And how does one go from Reginald and Brian to Ulysses?grin]

WithACherryOnTop · 07/06/2012 19:30

Best friend of course sorry.Blush

TalHotBlond · 07/06/2012 19:37

I don't live far from you under.

Ulysses is the best of the bunch I think but I don't know if I'd be brave enough to use it. It'd take a certain kind of person to pull it off.

pinkappleby · 07/06/2012 19:40

I think Brian is a lovely name.

Well, when I read your thread title, I assumed it was going to be a joke thread, and you had assembled the three most ridiculous names you could think of. Make of that what you will Smile.

zipzap · 07/06/2012 20:27

Ds2 (then 3 and barely talking) named his bakugan Brian last year - he was really insistent about it. No idea where he picked it up (bit young for Brian Cox!) but he was adamant that it was going to be Brian the Bakugan :o

He then chose the name for the school Christmas fayre 'name a bear' competition and won the bear!

So I think there are some good vibes going for Brian...

ipanicked · 07/06/2012 20:46

Aw I think your names are getting a hard press. I think Reginald is great (also my grandad!), I know a 4 week old Reginald plus Reggie is cute. Not so keen on Brian, but that's just personal and it would be a lovely way to remember your dad. Ulysses is great but that's a hard name to carry!

AgathaPinchBottom · 07/06/2012 22:25

I think they're all really cool! Love Reggie for Reginald and Rex too! Good luck choosing!

ludog · 08/06/2012 21:36

I like Brian. I have a very handsome 21 year old nephew called Brian so I may be slightly biased.

Tigresswoods · 08/06/2012 21:37

Reggie!!!! Grin

ZhenThereWereTwo · 08/06/2012 21:45
, brilliant!

Nicknames - Uly or Lyss or whatever middle name you choose could be made into nickname.

Romilly70 · 08/06/2012 21:45

OP, just referring to your comment about you DS being mixed race, I think your DP does have a point.

IMO, black people can really carry off some cool names. Eg Kanye West
Ulysses will sound great.

I have an unusual name in RL and it's nice to not need a surname to be remembered

Janoschi · 08/06/2012 22:22

I like Brian and Reginald. Find it odd seeing folk commenting they aren't good baby names - they don't have to be! Baby is only a baby for a couple of years. And I think fashion is also daft. I love that these names mean a lot to you both and thats a great reason to use a name. Better than trying to be fashionable.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/06/2012 12:03

Don't like any of them, sorry - but Ulysses is by far the worst.

shockers · 09/06/2012 12:15

Procrastinate, that was my initial thought too. I felt a bit mean when I saw the reasons for the names, but it was still my first thought....

Sorry.

wild · 09/06/2012 12:18

Ulysses is the best by far

scottishmummy · 09/06/2012 12:25

I like Reginald,its a solid name

DillyTante · 09/06/2012 12:30

Sorry don't like any of them. Thought this was a joke thread.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/06/2012 12:48

I like Reginald, you have Rex reggie reg.

I actually do like it!
