..of the name Genty?

Its my dear mother in laws name whom i adore. Her family having travelling roots and its a common name amongst travellers but, i have never heard of a gorger with this name.

I love it and would like it for any future DDs but, am not sure how it would be received in non-travelling communities?

What do you all think?

is it said Genty (hard G) or Jenty?

It's OK but I think people would not know how to say it.

It's nice. I think people will assume it is a nickname for a longer name, like Jennifer, though. So it depends if that would bother you at all.

It's not a name I have ever heard of. It doesn't fall into 'known but rare' for me. That's why I would assume it was a nickname.

If it's a 'traveller' name, it's probably best not to use it. Also, she will spend her entire life telling people how it is spelt/said/where it's from - depends if that bothers you or not.

Fine as a nickname,or a middle name,but it doesn't really work as a first name imho.

Wanted peoples opinions on it as a name, all our family and friends know it as MIL so are obviously biased as shes wonderful in every way !

Think i would use it as a middle name. Saves her from a lifetime of being called 'Genty girl' i suppose!

I'm confused about the not using it because it's a traveller's name point as well.

I'm going to sound a bit silly, but I didn't know that there were specific 'traveller' names I think it's lovely that you want to acknowledge your DCs heritage and that you should definitely do it! I'm personally not a fan of the name... Are there any other traveller names that you know of? Id be really interested to hear them

It's sweet - it reminds me of the word 'gently'. How lovely that you want to name a future DD after your MIL.

I think that if you were to spell the name as 'Jenty' then this would lessen the likelihood of your future DD having to constantly correct people's mispronunciation (FWIW, I read the name as 'Jen-tea).

Alternatively, a full name like Genevieve could incorporate Genty as a NN.

I think you'd need to be prepared for your future DD to not always have an easy time with this name, though - not that you should pander to people's ignorance about Travellers. To some, being a Traveller carries negative connotations which might influence responses towards your child/family, etc. If I were me, I'd incorporate Genty as a nickname but obviously, it's your choice :)

I dont think the names are copyrighted but definitely some that are very widely used amongst travellers (the ones i know anyway!) i will write a list for you.
Iam very proud of my childrens hertiage (mine & DHs!) so wanted to see how this name would be seen in 'normal' society.

Not looking too positive though. Not that i'd let that worry me too much tbh just wanted to know if i was actually blinded by trying to honour my Dmil!

Thanks Lunar i see what you are saying regarding negativity towards Travellers. I am of course biased as i am surrounded by them on an almost daily basis and have found 99% of the ones i have met to be kind, respectful, hardworking and generous!

I managed to escaped a baby Belcher sounds like a horses name to me Although iam irish and named my dog Paddy so iam obviously not too inventive myself

We live in a horribly judgemental society milky that, with regard to Travellers, gets most of it's information about their culture from My Big Fat Gypsy Weddings and vile tabloid rubbish. Not good :(

It shouldn't put you off the name by any means - you should NOT be afraid or ashamed of yours and your child's cultural heritage. Just be mindful that there are a lot of ignorant and judgemental people out there x

My DS1s name has great sentiment and my DS2s middle names are his much loved grandfathers names so i wanted something equally as meaningful for any daughters that may invade my womb!

Iam not one for plucking any name out of OK magazine or playing scrabble with a name. I believe they are quite important so wanted to know outsiders perspectives too! Thanks everyone !
