..of the name Genty?

Its my dear mother in laws name whom i adore. Her family having travelling roots and its a common name amongst travellers but, i have never heard of a gorger with this name.

I love it and would like it for any future DDs but, am not sure how it would be received in non-travelling communities?

What do you all think?

What is the point of saying "I wouldn't use it because of the traveller connection"? OP and her family HAVE a traveller connection, by blood! That's exactly why she wants to use it!

Ive heard the name, but for some reason always assumed it was male. For that reason i cant help imagining a man when someone says the name. Is genty not the name of a horse from a novel?

milkymocha · 03/06/2012 20:28

Oh iam not sure Puds i would be interested to see this novel though Grin
Iam almost positive it is solely a female name, an old fashioned one at that.

Yes its my in-laws who are travellers. So my childrens blood but, i have been accepted by all the family and very much respect their way of life. Although i do not live in a travelling community, my children will be going to school with non-travellers, will no doubt work/live/socialise mainly in non-travelling circles so i wanted the opinions of other every day people!

milkymocha · 03/06/2012 20:42

I have never heard of it before (although I do know a Jinty: I have always assumed it was a nickname, but I don't know what it might be short for). Anyway, even if it is "made up" so what? Apparently Wendy was "made up" by JM Barrie, and Fiona was "made up" by Walter Scott .... go figure!!

dangerousliaison · 03/06/2012 20:58

If it's a 'traveller' name, it's probably best not to use it Shock

I like it

WithACherryOnTop · 03/06/2012 21:03

It does have a nice sound. You could call her Gentiana or Gentian, and use Genty as a nickname. They are very unusual names though,so perhaps you might as well just use Genty.

dangerousliaison · 03/06/2012 21:14

from google looks like irish boys name and australian girls name

randomswitch · 03/06/2012 21:20

I really like it! Whatever name you choose some people wil like it and others won't so you may as well go with what you like and what has meaning for you. Because it's unusual people will ask about it which I think is nice as it's a chance to explain the family connection (and you won't get the chance to do this if it is hidden as a middle name).

Takver · 03/06/2012 21:26

I think its a really pretty name, and I think its lovely to have a name with a family connection.

puds11 · 03/06/2012 21:53

Oooh so i was right about the male name? Yey!

milkymocha · 03/06/2012 21:54

Nobody likes a know-it-all puds Grin!!!

It reminds me of gents' toilets, sorry Blush

abbypumpkin · 04/06/2012 18:20

If you love it and want to honour someone then I wouldn't worry what anyone will think. There will be people with prejudices against travellers but there will be people who will judge if you name your child Chardonnay, jacques, Mohammed, Tristan, chuck, blue, strawberry etc etc etc so go for it

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 04/06/2012 20:19

Not really doing it for me, sorry.

marchpoppy · 04/06/2012 20:33

I like it and its meaning for you. Abit like a feminine form of Jonty too.

I have some traveller roots and love the traveller name Defiance (for a girl), shortened to Vie or Fie. But I won't use it as it's just too 'out there'!

dangerousliaison · 04/06/2012 20:42

I think my dd should have been named defiance Grin

BillyBollyBandy · 04/06/2012 20:51

But if you are not a traveller you wouldn't know it was a traveller name - so I don't see how there would be discrimination.

It being a "traveller" name wouldn't bother me. However, the name itself I don't like. I also thought it sounded male and was going to suggest Jonty Blush

Badgerina · 05/06/2012 11:51

I noticed, whilst at the cinema yesterday, that the costume designer on Prometheus is called Janty Yates Grin I like Janty. It's very cute Grin
