Realised we made a huge mistake re. DC's surname!

Have name changed as this is massively outing. When DC1 was born DH and I weren't yet married so decided to give DS a double barrelled name as I didn't want to have a completely different surname to him. All was good, we thought it sounded good at the time and, actually, it does work with his first name. However it sounds utterly crap with everything we like for DC2.

The surname is Fox-Wilde and now I kind of think it doesn't work well at all. DC1 is in reception so knows his name etc, but would it be weird if
a) DC1 and DC2 have slightly different surnames (DC2 would just be Wilde which is DH's surname)
b) we changed DC1's surname to just Wilde?

It is really weird for two children with the same two biological parents to have different surnames. Indeed, in France, where I live, all children must have the same surname when they have the same two parents. In my family, the DSSs have DP's surname, and DD has a double-barrelled surname (DP's surname followed by my surname).

Agree with others - Fox-Wilde is very nice so don't change it!

I LOVE that surname, it's fab. We all have double barrelled names but not as cool as fox-wilde

I love it. Of course, I would have gone for Wilde-Fox and named any daughter 'Vixen' but that's just me!

Fox-Wilde is a great name. Use it for your second child too!

Did you change names when you married? (The wording of your post suggests that you were not married when you had your first child but are now but I might have that wrong.)

We weren't married when we had DC1 but have got married since and I changed my name to Wilde

I insist that you all must become fox-Wilde immediately. Fantastic surname. Am jealous!

I don't think Ivo works brilliantly with it, but gus does and as other posters have said it could easily be lengthened.

I am having a surname dilemma of my own. My child is named after her dad. He doesnt have any contact. My child asked if they culd change their name to my surname. My child is under 16 years old so id have to apply to do it.

Agree that Ivo probably works least well with your surname, the others are fine with it though. Like the suggestions of giving Gus a longer first name then shorten if you want to as a nn - especially like Fergus Fox-Wilde, love alliteration.

I also think it sounds impressive. HOWEVER - since you are now married and you have taken your husband's name of Wilde, I do think it appears slightly pretentious or odd to have double-barrelled your children's names. I have friends who, upon marriage, double-barrelled their surnames for them and their consequent children.

Also, Wilde on its own is a fabulous surname. If I were you, I'd change DS1's surname, all have the same surname of Wilde, and open up your name choices for DC2. Augustus Wilde is a wonderful name, for example.

Meant to add, it's not as though you're completely changing DS1's name, you're just dropping the middle bit. I think 'Wilde' is the name that sounds most like the surname since it is the last word you hear at the moment, and that would remain the same if you dropped the 'Fox' bit.

Adore both Gus and Ivo, probably prefer Ivo, but mainly because it is a name I have always liked. Do it, do it, do it.

I used a middle name of my sons for the first five years, then the school insisted on using his first name. Some people call him by his middle name and others by his first name....its a nightmare.
