Hi all, just found out today that im expecting a girl! Before i got pregnant me and my partner said if we had a girl, then she would be called Devon. I ve only ever known one person called it before. I love unusual names, gives them some individuality, instead of having a popular name that several children have in their class at school. Devon's middle name will be Elizabeth (my mothers middle name). However when i ve mentioned the name Devon to afew people, not many are keen on it. Makes me wonder whether to think of something else? The phrase "your calling her what?" has been said afew times!

It's a boys name isn't it? If I saw it written down I would immediately assume it was a boy.

belindarose · 30/05/2012 17:06

I've taught two. One girl and one boy (one lived in Devon...). Golden rule - don't tell real life people your ideas for names!

Expectantmum2b · 30/05/2012 17:07

It's unisex, the one child i ve heard it from was a little girl. I believe it is more common in boy's than girl's according to internet rankings on the name.

P.S I also chose named for my children that would mean they would not be one of several in their class with that name. DH chose DS1's which is a slightly American sounding surname-first name type. I chose DS2's which is a European name with Irish, Italian and Germanic roots. One is only just in the top 100 baby names, the other is around 250th.

What are the names Bella?

Devon Elizabeth - fab name! Grin

squoosh · 30/05/2012 17:10

It's a county's name rather than a person's name. A name that American's think is very English. An English character in an The Bold and the Beautiful might be called this.

Dislcaimer: I have never watched The Bold and the Beautiful.

anniemcphee · 30/05/2012 17:10

I only know one Devon - its a boy.

Good choice with Elizabeth! (My DD has the same middle name)

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 30/05/2012 17:11

There are actually two in year six in DD's school. That must be pretty unusual. What makes it more unusual is that one is a boy and one is a girl.

I'm not keen.

Expectantmum2b · 30/05/2012 17:14

Brielle is also another fave of mine, but my partner hates it :-(

squoosh · 30/05/2012 17:16

Um, Brielle does sound an eensy bit like an oven cleaner.

Expectantmum2b · 30/05/2012 17:16

He did mention it reminded him of a Billo pad?

You sound like you like American names. Someone on here posts lists of names belonging to babies born in her local (American) hospital. Some of the names are crackers but there's probably some good stuff in there too :)

Expectantmum2b · 30/05/2012 17:24

Thanks squoosh i ve just had a look at that link - some horrible names on there lol

I prefer it for a girl than for a boy.

I think its nice

lisaro · 30/05/2012 17:38

Devon and Brielle are, frankly, ugly.

SoozyWoozy · 30/05/2012 18:09

Devon White was a footballer for Cambridge United... I used to make excuses to go with my brother to matches so I could watch him, and him alone :o

I was 14 at the time....

Completely off track, mind you. Gah.

NarkedPuffin · 30/05/2012 18:32

Teegan, Honey, Tierney, Dulcie - names liked by people who also like your suggestions on a baby name site. Does it work [intrigued].

jammic · 30/05/2012 18:40

My DH (a Cambridge united fan who remembers Devon white) also said there was a male Devon in Knightrider. I quite like the name. If you like it, go for it. We picked an unusual name that no-one particularly liked whilst i was pregnant but now our DS suits it perfectly and everyone loves it. Our at least that's what they tell me! Haha.

MrsTrellisOfSouthWales · 30/05/2012 18:47

I'd think Knightrider.

BuntyPenfold · 30/05/2012 18:49

I know 2 Devons, both boys age 7-8, and both live in Devon.

DancingwithDragons · 30/05/2012 18:51

I like it Grin

CalamityJones · 30/05/2012 18:53

Devon Aoki is very much a girl..
