Hi all, just found out today that im expecting a girl! Before i got pregnant me and my partner said if we had a girl, then she would be called Devon. I ve only ever known one person called it before. I love unusual names, gives them some individuality, instead of having a popular name that several children have in their class at school. Devon's middle name will be Elizabeth (my mothers middle name). However when i ve mentioned the name Devon to afew people, not many are keen on it. Makes me wonder whether to think of something else? The phrase "your calling her what?" has been said afew times!

I love it! It was one of the ones on my list Grin

jammiec - just say "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Moose!!!!" to your DH :) :) Happy memories of the Newmarket Road stand!

Do you have any connections with Devon? I'm not sure whether I'd use it otherwise but, then again, I'm not really sure I understand place names for girls. Obviously Devon is a better pick for a first name than Cornwall or Leicestershire but I think it'd be a curious choice without a connection to the area. Do you live there? Spent your honeymoon there?

It does sound nice but it just makes me think of the county (which isn't a bad association but it is a very strong one)...

Nell McAndrew's son is called Devon.

Also, random fact, her real name is Tracey.

thegreylady · 30/05/2012 21:51

I only know of Devon Malcolm the cricketer

CountryMama · 30/05/2012 22:41

I love it! But then again it is the most beautiful place on earth... good for a lovely girl!

jammic · 31/05/2012 03:52

Soozy hehe DH has been reminiscing... Xx

colmargirl · 31/05/2012 08:41

I've taught 3 Devons at secondary school, 2 girls & 1 boy. One of the girls was a lovely pretty little thing who was an absolute delight to teach, & so I associated her name in a positive way. The other two however were notoriously awful, and so in our school the name was then synonymous with very naughty children!

I think it's very American and a bit odd tbh.
Anglia?
Cheshire?
Powys?

Niceupthedance · 31/05/2012 13:18

I like it, but not keen on the nickname Dev.

threeleftfeet · 31/05/2012 13:24

I know a lovely woman called Devon (she never gets called Dev!).

Great name,

othersideofchannel · 31/05/2012 13:28

I know a girl Devon. Yes, it sounds unisex but then so do many names (Alex, Morgan etc). People will very quickly associate the name with your dd!

BigHairyFlowers · 31/05/2012 13:28

Rachael Leigh Cook's character in dawson's creek was called Devon. I love it, btw Smile

I know a couple of Devons, one male and one female, and they are both lovely!

GoPoldark · 01/06/2012 15:46

Devon is lovely.

How about Briony instead of Brielle?

peachypips · 02/06/2012 19:10

I wanted it for ds1, but because we live in Devon I thought it would be weird!

Showmethemhappyfeet · 02/06/2012 20:32

I love it!

scottishmummy · 02/06/2012 20:40

great name
unisex have met male and female devon

Jubilcece · 02/06/2012 20:42

I know only girl Devons.

It is not what I would choose but if you like then go for it. However NEVER tell ANYONE your name choices till after the birth. Not even GRANDPARENTS or BEST FRIENDS.

Littleplasticpeople · 02/06/2012 20:45

scottishmummy · 02/06/2012 20:47

we didn't disclose our baby names to anyone

barbie1 · 02/06/2012 20:48

My dd is called Devon and we have only ever had positive remarks about it...well to our face at least Wink Grin

Bunbaker · 02/06/2012 20:52

"Um, Brielle does sound an eensy bit like an oven cleaner."

Even worse it reminds me of this.

Please be kind to your child and don't use this name. Devon is OK - a bit try too hard, but OK.

Expectantmum2b · 18/06/2012 17:12

Barbie1 Do you know anyone else with the same name? Is it unusual in your area?

monkeymoma · 18/06/2012 20:25

I think of it as a boys name,
no matter I like boyish names on girls (don't really like it as a boys name)

WopBopALooBop · 19/06/2012 07:53

Love it! Whenever I hear of a male Devon I think that it's a very girly name. Devon is a lovely place too :)
