I have often considered Caspar as a possible name...it both looks and sounds beautiful imo however there is that blasted cute ghost which I think is a major factor in this name not being more popular!! Though in the last year I am after hearing of 4 little Caspars is it starting to become more acceptable as a name......what are your thoughts????? Smile

I too have heard it more and more recently.
My initial thought is ...the friendly ghost, but I do quite like it!
if it helps, 2 children I know with this name spell it Kaspar, which maybe takes it away from the friendly ghost association a little bit?

ABatInBunkFive · 09/05/2012 16:09

The friendly ghost is CaspEr Wink

I know someone who named their child Casper and i didn't like it but have got used to it, it's not offensive that's for sure. Wink

WithACherryOnTop · 09/05/2012 16:45

I love it. I don't automatically think of the ghost, not that the association would bother me.

Wildwaterfalls · 09/05/2012 16:57

I really like it... Considering for if we are having a boy. I am thinking Casper though.

The friendly ghost does spring to mind, but don't think that is a big deal.

Keen to hear if it is getting very popular though!

5madthings · 09/05/2012 16:59

Love it, my most favourite nephew in the world is called Caspar, he is adorable, its a great name :)

and yes the ghost is CaspEr, do be prepared for people to spell it wrong tho, my sister complains of this!

i dont think its very popular you could have a look on that thread recenlty where you could type in a name and it tells you how many children have been called it in various years? not sure what thread it was, sure someone can find it and link tho :)

DottieRose · 09/05/2012 17:30

Well I live in the midlands in Ireland and have heard it twice around here however I do think the majority of people would raise an eyebrow at it! I am in love with the name. Is there any difference between the Casper and Caspar pronounciation? I don't think there is so either way you spell it I think people will still think ghost if they are inclined to that line of thought anyway!!!

5madthings · 09/05/2012 18:31

dottierose he is only 4mths, almost 5mths old, everyone loves it so far!(or at least my sister hasnt told me if anyone has been negative) its a lovely name Grin and very apt for a christmas baby as my nephew is :)

DottieRose · 09/05/2012 18:48

Yep Caspar is definitely super cute for a Christmas baby....I'm ever so slightly envious Grin

I love Caspar! I wouldn't get too hung up on the friendly ghost connection - DS5 is Barney and I've only ever had one person mention the purple dinosaur. It doesn't bother me if they think that, I've never actually watched it!

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 09/05/2012 19:45

I love it. Also love Caspian and Cassius.

5madthings · 09/05/2012 19:58

Yes Cassius is also lovely! :)

and i dont think people will snigger at them because of the ghost.

Pearla · 09/05/2012 20:07

I think you are right, it both looks and sounds beautiful. Rare to find both qualities in one name. :)

OneLittleBabyTerror · 09/05/2012 20:48

It sounds unusual and lovely. It did remind me of the friendly ghost, but I don't think it's a problem at all.

I love this name so, so much, especially the spelling you've chosen OP - we spell it like that in Holland.

I really want to use it if we have a boy (we find out on Friday!!!!), but a) DH doesn't like it and b) it probably sounds a bit too similar to Oscar (DS1) SadAngrySad

Yes there is a friendly ghost connection, but bugger that, loads of names have weird and wonderful connections.

Use it! I need some vicarious naming-joy Grin

NiceViper · 09/05/2012 21:57

I think it's a lovely name!

DottieRose · 10/05/2012 17:28

Yes Cassius is also lovely though I hear it popping up here quite a bit but have never heard it before using mumsnet!!! Still think I prefer Caspar Smile

How do you pronounce Cassius? My dh is beside me telling me it is Cash us but I think it is Cass ee us!

OP posts:
silverfrog · 10/05/2012 17:36

Caspar is lovely.

dh won't let me put it on the list for dc3

it is a fab name - don't let the ghost put you off; after all, people don't discount Thomas because of the Tank Engine, or Barnaby because of the purple dinosaur.

dh also won't consider Linus (but his reasoning is not because of the Peanuts character!). I might sulk. lots.

DottieRose · 10/05/2012 17:43

The ghost thing is really annoying, I feel that the majority of people won't see past it to what a beautiful name it is Angry Grin

Love Linus and don't think many people would associate with the Peanuts nowadays, in fact don't think my kids have ever seen a peanuts cartoon.

tammytoby · 10/05/2012 17:52

Oh, sorry I had misunderstood you, thought your dh was worried about that association.
