You could go Mitford-esque and have Polly short for Leopoldina?

pixiestix · 05/05/2012 12:29

Polly is lovely. Apollonia is a bit poncy but its still very pretty. Aurelia is really nice.

TheGrandOldDuke · 05/05/2012 12:43

I do like Aurelia but concerned it sounds a bit too much like areola Confused

Leopoldina wins in the saddle your child with a pretentious and obscure name to outdo your friends stakes.

mirry2 · 05/05/2012 13:59

Why not let it be her middle name? You can still call her Polly as a nn

tentative123 · 05/05/2012 14:05

I'm just a Polly not short for anything And I love it!

TheGrandOldDuke · 05/05/2012 20:17

Sounds Horsey = sorry!

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 06/05/2012 23:33

It is a very silly name.

Ambrosius · 06/05/2012 23:46

I like it! Dp wanted to call ds Apollo but it didn't suit him when he actually arrived!

TheGrandOldDuke · 07/05/2012 08:24

Now I've gone off it anyway, but beckysharp how is it silly? You can say you don't like it, but saying it's silly is unfounded. It is as 'silly' as Ryan or Sarah or Elizabeth. It's not a made up name, it's one of the oldest around. Silly isn't a justified adjective I'm afraid!

All three of my children have unusual names that I've never heard anyone else called, both my sister and I have unusual names too so it just suits! I think no one comments because it's the norm in our family.......but if you have Sarah's and John's then introduce an unusual name it then sticks out & gets commented on!
I would say if you asked then your slightly unsure and therefor shouldn't choose it and go for something else :) good luck

TheGrandOldDuke · 07/05/2012 16:53

Oh I do like Ivana, I just don't have the guts. I've moved on now. I just don't like people being rude for the sake of it, if one doesn't like a name, then fine say so, but no need to say its silly etc. What if someone called it is reading this?!
