I think it's lovely, but she's the patron saint of toothache, if that bothers you!

TheGrandOldDuke · 03/05/2012 21:01

Hmmm I'd have to stock up on Ashton and parsons and calpol....

I went to school with an Apollonia, her surname was T a n n e r.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 03/05/2012 21:04

Posted too soon. She was very quiet and reserved and we called her Api.

I like it and I think your classics degree is enough of a reason to choose it.

lucyellensmumnamechange · 03/05/2012 21:04

I think it depend son your surname love polly though appolonia sounds like a place

BackforGood · 03/05/2012 21:07

I think if you are a bit embarrassed to even tentatively suggest it to us - load of strangers on the internet - then you probably aren't ready to have to tell everyone in real life, now are you ?

I don't like it, but that's a bit irrelavent as you are so hesitant yourself, IMO.

TheGrandOldDuke · 03/05/2012 21:09

Oh I'm reticent because I know my family will raise eyebrows and be like 'seriously'. And I do care what people think. Well what my family think and friends think. No offence, but I'm not too bothered that most people here don't, because it is a bit off the wall, and you're never going to get a name everyone likes. But yes, I'm worried what family will say.

Annunziata · 03/05/2012 21:13

What other names do you like?

TheGrandOldDuke · 03/05/2012 21:16

Aurelia. Seraphina. Cressida. Katy. Eloise.
But Polly is my favourite.

If you love it, go for it! They are all great names though.

Francagoestohollywood · 03/05/2012 21:20

I love the name Polly. Not keen on Apollonia

BackforGood · 03/05/2012 21:23

Well, if you are the type to care about what your family and friends think, and you know they won't like it, then don't use it.
Use Polly, or Katy, or Eloise.

ChocolateIsAFoodGroup · 03/05/2012 21:24

As you've asked for the advice of a bunch of strangers on the internet Grin I'd go for Aurelia over Apollonia - they both have the same 'feel' but the first one is one everyone's heard of - with Apollonia you will spend your time responding to people saying 'Apple what?' or even 'like Gwenyth Paltrow?' (which I'm just guessing is an association you may want to avoid?)

Go for Aurelia!

sonniboo · 03/05/2012 21:27

I think Apollonia sounds very elegant and European. Sounds lovely in most languages too. I like it, but am less keen on Polly (reminds me of Polyester).

PfftTheMagicDraco · 03/05/2012 22:21

I don't dislike the name itself (I was gunning for Persephone for DD myself) but there's something about it that sounds like a pony.

WithACherryOnTop · 03/05/2012 22:32

I really dislike it.Well really it's Polly I loathe.I've never understood the appeal of that name.

chocolatecoffinplease · 03/05/2012 23:37

Love them both. Go for it.

duchesse · 03/05/2012 23:41

Love it. Probably wouldn't use on my own children as DH is a tad more conservative than Ancient Greek names alas... DD3 ended up not being a rather lovely name that I really loved something a tad less conservative and has ended to my shame with a top 100 name that gets shortened to a nn that is the name equivalent to me of nails on a blackboard. She's now 2.8 and I still want to change it. I just call her by a shortened version of the name I wanted, as a nn.

Sounds like a software package. "fer fucks sake, appollonia's down again and I've got to run the reports!". Polly's nice though.

duchesse · 03/05/2012 23:54

Or nocturnal crack time...

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 04/05/2012 00:01

Sorry, but I really really don't like it :(

MarySA · 04/05/2012 00:04

I don't like it either. Sorry. I think there are better names than that one.

GoPoldark · 04/05/2012 00:56

Don't you like Polydora?
