poppy or iris?

we're torn between the two - any votes either way?

my concern about poppy is that it might not work so well when she's a grown up if she goes into a serious career, however if there are lots of women with flower names by then would it still seem that way? also would she end up being called pops (which i hate?)

iris is lovely - but is it as child friendly as doesn't lend itself to nicknames so much?

Both are lovely.

I think you're right re by the time she's an adult, there will be other adults called Poppy so it will be fine.

Likewise I know a very sweet little Iris and it works as a little girl's name.

I prefer Iris fwiw.

BBQJuly · 01/05/2012 14:07

Poppy is lovely and I think it's fine as a grown-up name. There are plenty of little Poppys now, so it won't be unusual as woman's name in the future.

Not so keen on Iris.

AThingInYourLife · 01/05/2012 14:11

I love Iris.

I know a little girl called Iris and she is adorable and it really suits her.

I also know an adult Poppy, suits her fine.

NarcolepsyQueen · 01/05/2012 14:12

I vote for Iris. It depends on what you think she might look like though - I'm 5ft 9 - so would hate to be Poppy, as I'm not cute iykwim? Sissy as NN for Iris?

Alligatorpie · 01/05/2012 14:13

I like Poppy, but not Pops, so i would go with Iris.

chocolatecheesecake · 01/05/2012 14:38

Thanks everyone. Good point narcolepsyqueen - she probably won't look cute as an adult Blush -more likely to be tall with glasses - so definitely something to consider.

I love both of them and think both are suitable for both adult and child, my personal choice would be Iris because it is a more unusual flower name. My dd is called Ivy which is also nice for adult/child.

DottieRose · 01/05/2012 15:37

I think Iris would work best as an adult.....how about Iris Poppy!

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/05/2012 15:39

Iris

piji · 01/05/2012 15:42

Depends whether you want her career to be in opthalmology or music.

MoonHare · 01/05/2012 15:51

Love the name Iris anyway so it's a clear winner against Poppy for me.

Plus Poppy is just too cutsie and just because there will be a lot of grown women called Poppy in 25 years time won't mean the name has anymore gravitas for those adults.

poppy283 · 01/05/2012 17:08

I'm a grown-up Poppy, and I like my name. I do get called Pops but only by close family and DP.
I think it's a great name for all ages :)
But Iris is lovely too!

Montsti · 01/05/2012 19:37

I love Poppy! Not keen on Iris though.

Stellan · 01/05/2012 19:38

Iris.

I like the way Poppy sounds - very energetic and sweet - but it always reminds me of Remembrance Sunday.

ViolaCrayola · 01/05/2012 19:39

Prefer Iris by a whisker but both lovely :)

goodygumdrops · 01/05/2012 19:41

Both nice but I think Poppy is prettier.

RetroMum1 · 01/05/2012 19:47

I have a Poppy so obviously love it however we always call her Pops or Popster. I said I never would while pregnant and four years later it just seems natural.

I also love Iris though and it isn't as common, Poppy is now number 16 in name charts.having said that my Poppy is the only one around here that we've met.

Both great names, lovely choices.

joymaker · 01/05/2012 19:59

Iris

littlepie · 01/05/2012 20:18

I like both but I think Iris would need a nn as a child, it sounds quite "grown up" to me.

AThingInYourLife · 01/05/2012 20:25

I don't think Iris needs a nickname. It's two syllables long!

There's no need for cutesy names for little girls. They are cute enough on their own :)

Cydonia · 01/05/2012 21:27

Iris is on my short list, I like the fact it means rainbow, I love the flowers and I love the song by goo goo dolls! Plus I work with animals and Poppy is quite a common cat's name. But that's just me!

MrsJohnDeere · 01/05/2012 21:29

Iris

MissPricklePants · 01/05/2012 21:30

I am biased, my dd is Poppy! I adore it and she is a right character, not a girly girl but suits this 'cutie' name! I know a couple more Poppy's and a few Iris's too, in fact my sil is debating calling dc2 Iris if she has a girl!

MissPricklePants · 01/05/2012 21:31

Oh and my dd's name gets shortened to Pop's by some people but never by me or family!Hate shortening her name!

chocolatecheesecake · 01/05/2012 21:51

Thanks everyone, looking forward to showing DH and hopefully making a decision.
