poppy or iris?

we're torn between the two - any votes either way?

my concern about poppy is that it might not work so well when she's a grown up if she goes into a serious career, however if there are lots of women with flower names by then would it still seem that way? also would she end up being called pops (which i hate?)

iris is lovely - but is it as child friendly as doesn't lend itself to nicknames so much?

i work with an iris, and on meeting her, i thought, oh what a lovely name.

Springforward · 01/05/2012 22:10

I like both of these.

telsa · 01/05/2012 22:24

I really don't like Iris - can't get away from the old-ladyishness of it. It is rather solemn.
Poppy is lovely - conjures up a great burst of red. It doesn't have to be shortened to Pops. And there will be a few when she is older, so won't seem cutesy. Anyway, who would have thought there would be a number of serious journalists called Daisy, as there are now.

Our first baby would have been Poppy but he was a boy! Our second was a girl and is Iris. I think it is more elegant than poppy. But suits my 2 year old perfectly. No nick name needed - don't really understand why one would be???

squoosh · 02/05/2012 10:50

Poppy reminds me of bulging eyes. I don't like it.

Iris is far nicer.

kerala · 02/05/2012 11:10

I really can't stand Poppy sorry. IMO its not an appropriate name for an adult woman feel this about Honey and Daisy as well. Fine for a curly haired toddler but a magistrate or bank manager? Not so much.

ButterPecanMuffin · 02/05/2012 12:10

I prefer Iris.

tigrou · 02/05/2012 12:42

Iris sounds much more elegant to me, lovely name. Poppy is too cutsie for me.

galletti · 02/05/2012 12:49

Poppy for me. And Kerala, what name exactly is appropriate for an adult woman?

kerala · 02/05/2012 12:53

Any name that isn't cutesy ditsy Honey, Poppy, Millie etc. I just feel "Doctor Honey/Poppy will see you now" sounds weird in a way that say Doctor Eve/Iris/Sarah wouldn't. Don't jump down my throat though only my opinion!

tara0202 · 02/05/2012 12:53

IMO Poppy is just too cutesy and non serious for an adult but very nice for a toddler. Iris is elegant and sophisticated. Just my opinion!

mommybunny · 02/05/2012 14:58

Not nuts about either but Iris better than Poppy - agree Poppy a little cutesy. If you want a flower name (and no reason why not), how about Rose or Violet?

Ephiny · 02/05/2012 15:03

I prefer Iris. Not keen on Poppy, I think it has quite an ugly sound/look, and also doesn't seem like a 'proper' name to me somehow (I know that's somewhat arbitrary and subjective, of course!).

There are many much nicer flower names to choose from. Iris is lovely and elegant. And it can be a good thing to have a name that doesn't lend itself to nicknames (don't underestimate the ability of kids to come up with something though!)

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 03/05/2012 15:54

I think Poppy is one of those names that will be "cute" as a child and fine as a self-confident adult, but a total nightmare as a pre-teen and teenager who's trying to be taken seriously and act an adult, iyswim?

Yorkpud · 04/05/2012 14:00

I like both, but would probably go for Iris as I love that it means rainbow and like the flowers and the song too!!! You could have Rissa, Rissie or Riso as nns but I think Iris is nice just how it is.

CarriMarie · 04/05/2012 14:10

I think Poppy is lovely and in 20 years time there will be adult Poppys in all walks of life. Iris is growing on me, I used to think it was very straight-laced and serious, not sure why as the flower is quite pretty. Still prefer Poppy.

MarySA · 04/05/2012 14:54

I'd certainly go with Iris. Poppy is quite a pretty name but as you say not sure about it as a name for an adult.

tummytickler · 04/05/2012 16:35

I love Iris - my 11 year old dd is called Iris and I still love her name, she loves it too. No nn needed, although her sister and brothers often call her Ishy.
Poppy is ok. Quite popular, but i know 2 adult Poppies, who manage just fine, and seem to be taken perfectly seriously! It does have a lovely Flower Fairy picture to go with it too!
