For anyone following the saga, our surname is Cummings and we were going to go with Barnaby (nn Barney) but somehow didn't use it so it hasn't stuck. We still might well go with it but an alternative has popped up - Rex. Similar to Max which we liked but hopefully without sounding rude?

I'd appreciate any honest opinions please!

your son is 5 weeks and no name?!!
What have you been calling him all this time - just 'baby'?

dont know how that can happen.....surely after 5 weeks you have an inkling of a name that he should be called?

I like Max

AntsMarching · 27/04/2012 17:48

I love the name Rex. Think it's strong and unusual. Also was the name of a beautiful boy I grew up with Grin

Ignore people who say it's a dog's name. My dog's name is Ella, should no one ever use that name now for a little girl? Very silly reasoning IMO.

Anonymousse · 27/04/2012 17:57

Yes we've been calling him baby!

Thanks for all the suggestions - unfortunately DH doesn't like Ben/Dexter/Zac/Charlie. Leo OK but not wow. Rob a family name, can't have Tom as DH is Tim

FishareFriends why would Rex not be good if he was a big lad?

Moonhare - exactly, I worry Barney a buit cutesy for a grown man

Holycamera - we have been back to the drawing board several times and this is what we've come up with

Rex seems to really divide opinion!!

I like Rex the best out of those 3, and Barney the least.

Stellan · 27/04/2012 18:05

Rex Cummings sounds a bit naughty to me too. Sorry, it's a hard surname to work with.

Benedict Cummings?

ivykaty44 · 27/04/2012 18:09

wow names are not good as you go of them, stick to good names that will last - like Leo. It will be timeless.

There where 52 boys given the name Rex in 2010

HalleLouja · 27/04/2012 18:11

I know a grown man called Barney. Its better than Rex. Much better.

rachel234 · 27/04/2012 18:28

I think Barnaby Cummings sounds great - elegant, cool and classy!

justnodandsmile · 27/04/2012 18:46

Oh no! You made the mistake of asking for people's opinions- I did that too and it made me feel terrible about my final choice (George) as everyone seemed to hate it. I did it anyway though as every name I picked people seemed to have something negative to say. I'm a primary school teacher and I've never had a 'Rex' so if you want unusual then that's probably the one. Personally I love the name Barney - all the Barneys I've come across have been middle class and super intelligent if that's what you're going for! Grin

joymaker · 27/04/2012 19:08

Oh Anonymousse I really feel for you as DP and I were in a similar position with our DS.

We changed the name we were going to use because as well as other issues it was being mispronounced. We really did pushed it to the wire -6 weeks! Though in that time, as you can imagine, he had an abundance of very affectionate nn Smile

Make sure it's right in the end. Good Luck in your decision x

thegreylady · 27/04/2012 22:28

I dont think the dog thing will be an issue but I do think that 3 to 7 yr olds may fix on 'T Rex' and he may be teased.I am another who loves Barnaby although Barney is yet another dinosaur of course!

startail · 27/04/2012 22:36

Aaron, no idea why it just popped in to my head. DF has a now teen Aaron and I've always liked the name.

RickGhastley · 27/04/2012 22:42

Rex is really nice.

How about:
Arran (stole your idea startail!)
Flynn
Nate

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 27/04/2012 23:00

I like Rex, by the way, I don't like Ben

WhereMyMilk · 27/04/2012 23:09

Alex? If you want the x?

I lobe Noah as well.

Ben's fab!

Rex no. Barnaby yes.

Normally I like Rex but Rex Cummings kinda sounds like a porn star.
Personally I think Barnaby is horrible but theres nothing wrong with the name I just don't like it.

I vote Levi or Leo

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 28/04/2012 00:54

Sadly, I think any name which includes Cummings will sound porn starrish! Sorry OP!
I love Rex.

i have a very lovely uncle rex. just so you know....

Badgerina · 28/04/2012 09:51

I agree with others on Cummings. THIS is the problem name, not the first names you like. Give the child your surname and choose MAX!

I still like Max, less keen on Rex.
