Well two actually - when I was pregnant I went out for a meal with three close friends who wanted to discuss my name choices. I love talking names, so happily divulged my first choice - a highly unusual name that I really loved. It went down like a lead balloon, with two of my friends barely disguising their horror/disapproval. I talked it through with dh - who was uncertain whether it would work. Anyway on the day of her birth, dh decided on his own that this unusual name was THE ONE. My friends have been more than a little uncomfortable that we didn't take their advice. (They suggested Florence or Amelia). It's fine now - in that I don't see these friends too often so it's not too awkward. But nearly a year later I do worry a little that I've burdened my dh with a v unusual name. (Dh is happy). I guess it's because the name change deadline is nearly up. I'm not sure I would, more whether I should..... Anyone else wish they'd played it safe? (It's not made up, strangely spelled or anything..)

My dad laughed when I told him my son's name. My MIL said "James is a nice name, why can't he just be James?"

fwiw the name we chose isn't a new one, isn't 'modern', so I don't know why their reactions.

Who cares what your friends think - do you love your dd's name? If so then keep it :)

My ds is 7 now & really suits his name.

iklboo · 22/04/2012 20:55

What is it? As long as it's not LemonPledge, BadgerFelcher or something that bizarre - and you & your DH like it.......

mrspnut · 22/04/2012 20:57

My dd1 has a fairly unusual name, not made up, and when she was born lots of people pulled a face when they were told but she absolutely suits it now.

She uses a shortened version now and not the same shortened version that we called her when she was small but it's a name that could go anywhere.
She often gets comments on how nice her name is when she has to use the full version and when she goes to Greece on holiday with my parents she gets the full on treatment because it's a Greek name.

chocolatecoffinplease · 22/04/2012 20:57

To be honest I don't really care what they think - which is why we went ahead with it. But my mum still finds it awkward to say her name. It's like she's a bit embarrassed or something. I do like it, but worry I've been a bit selfish....

my parents and sister could barely conceal their horror at the name we gave DS. Sister still remains disgusted by it, more than 2 years on.

He's called Oliver...

ignore your friends, they'll get their own chance to name children when they have them. For now, it's your and your DH's decision, so enjoy your lovely baby and sod your friends!

rhibutterfly · 22/04/2012 20:58

yes please tell i promise to be gentle, you wouldn't believe the backlash i got when i mentioned i liked ocean.

nooka · 22/04/2012 20:59

You've chosen a name that you are your dh love. Great! You don't see your opinionated friends too much (I think it is at least slightly outrageous that they should get the hump at you not picking their name choices - it's not their decision) Very wise.

I have a very unusual name that I love (again not made up or unusually spelled, just not at all widely used). It does share a potential shortening with a much more commonly used name (I've never used it, but it's good to have the flexibility). I enjoy not having to use my surname very much at all, and always get compliments (I do have to spell it though). I ended up giving one of my children a name which became very popular a year or two later, and slightly regret that, but it's a name we love and we've actually met very few. I think that names have become much more diverse in the last few years.

G'wan g'wan g'wan g'wan g'wan g'wan g'wan

chocolatecoffinplease · 22/04/2012 21:03

Yes. Good point nooks. Names do seem much more diverse now. My dc1 had a popular name and I didn't want to repeat that.

You might as well say now or you will just get hounded until you give in :)

YouAREworthIt · 22/04/2012 21:04

Threads like this are pointless imo if you don't say the name.

When I named my son a relative thought "you would have called him Nathan." WTF? I mean why? Probably because we share the first 2 letters Hmm. I called him George..

KenDoddsDadsDog · 22/04/2012 21:06

If you like it then bugger everyone else. But please tell us.

chocolatecoffinplease · 22/04/2012 21:06

Ok. Will post in code so any name searches don't pick up this thread/ my doubts. Take Maria and change the M to a Z. Emphasize the first syllable. Please don't post. Cheers.

I think it's lovely.

hippoCritt · 22/04/2012 21:08

Lovely name in my opinion, congratulations

AndOnAndOnAndOn · 22/04/2012 21:08

lovely Smile don't change it.

ThePieSmuggler · 22/04/2012 21:09

Stick with the name you've got, names are used to identify us, imagine how boring life would be if we were all called Jane and John (no offence to the Janes and Johns out there!)

Oh and please, please, please tell us what it is Grin

Babylon1 · 22/04/2012 21:10

Ah now I like that and there's a variation at my DD1s school, slightly longer version, but lovely.

I don't see any issue at all, enjoy it xx
