Girls name indecision!! (Baby without a name...

Hi there, DH and I desperately need to decide on baby girls name, now that we have seen her she kinda doesn't look like previous favourite names and there were barely any we both liked in the first place!!

Current shortlist (although we seem to be adding not ruling them out...;-)

Emilia (nn Milly)
Maisie
Daisy
Abbie (although I dislike Abigail but would still have to give her this as 'proper' name)

There even seems to be some sort of issue with these names, either one of our mums has made 'that face' about it as a suggestion, (which could grate on me for the next 20 years, knowing that they hate it) or I worry that we will saddle our daughter with a super common name/or one that is too cutesy and awful if she's not a girlie girl. Decisions decisions, never been my strong point! Any help gratefully received....

They never look like their name when they're born. Stick with your original name choice. Big congratulations Mummy

I vote Emilia or Daisy... Or whichever name someone made a face over, just to show them...

Emmeline is lovely too.

Daisy and Maisie are a bit cutesy for me and am not sure I Would want to be called these names as an adult.

Milly is lovely as a nn for Emilia and then she could revert back to Emilia if she prefers in later life.

Don't worry what other people think, it's up to you, and they're all lovely names :)

If you don't like Abigail I wouldn't go for Abbie.

what was the name you had decided on before she was born?

I know of an Abbey and that is her full name, and she suits it very well, shes a little cheeky thing. I like all your names but its not up to me, and dont worry about the faces people pull, its your baby you choose and well stuff everyone else.

Congratulations Scruffy. I think they are all beautiful and very pretty names. Maisie and Daisy I think of as more little girls' names. I'm trying to imagine being 50 (not hard, because I am 50) and being called either of these, especially this morning as I look particularly frazzled, hormonal and un- Daisy-like! Wouldn't worry about what faces people pull though. Unless you hand naming over to your Mums, they'll probably never be entirely happy with your choice. The main thing is how you both feel about the choice.

My parents and inlaws actively disliked DD1´s name and they all told us ... 5 years on and they don`t care ... they just love her like GPs do. Use the name you love.

If you like Abby but not Abigail how about
Abril (Spanish for April pronounced Ah breel) or variations on that, Abrielle, Avril

There's also the gaelic Ailbhe English version Alvy (meaning fair)

Think Emilia is also lovely.

I don't like 'cutesy' names either so I'd definitely go with Emilia nicknamed Milly.

I like Emilia and Abigail, because they both have good nn potential in Milly and Abby, but at the same time, they won't be saddled with such a cutesy name when they reach adulthood - they can opt for Emilia and Abigail. Having said that, if you really don't like Abigail, I think you should discount it - your daughter could grow up preferring to be called Abigail rather than Abby, and then you'd be in the awkward position of not liking her name, which seems silly.

Maisie and Daisy for me are too cute. Great on a little girl under the age of 10, not so great when she's in her 30s. They offer no 'grown-up' alternative, so for that reason, I'd discount them.

Collision, I added emmeline to the list for a bit as decided it was fab, but we are back to emilia and daisy as the alternatives now as I genuinely can't decide which one I love most and neither can DH!

Appreciate the advice about sticking with what we like despite possible family mumblings, they really won't give a monkeys i am sure and will all be round for cuddles as much as ever. Plus, I will be the one hollering it in the playground/park etc not them right?!

Emilia sounds grander and has more scope for nicknames than daisy> Milly Emmy, Lia x

Love Milly. It was top of my girls name list, until I married a guy whose name rhymes with it...

My mum didn't like DS' name when I told her but we called him it anyway and of course she loves it now because it's the name of her precious first GS.

I think it's the same as when people say 'I knew someone horrible called that'. When they meet your child it becomes their name, not that horrible person's, if you see what I mean.

I had exactly the same problem with Abigail. DH loved it but I didn't and only liked Abbie. As this was the only name we could agree on I went for it, two years on I call her Abbie but love Abigail too. I know am biased now though!

Do you have a middle name sorted? If not why not call her Emilia Daisy. I think that's a beautiful name.

Emilia is much better than Daisy. It is more grown up, and the cutesy nn Milly can be dropped f she wants to be more ladylike when she is older.
