Roan, Rohan, or Rowan?

Which of the three would you prefer if you had to pick? (If you like none of these, I'd prefer you just didn't comment full stop Smile)

I know Rohan can have different pronunciations, I would most likely pronounce it as a combo of the other two. Roan with a very slight syllable separation I suppose.

Roan I imagine is pronounced as in the horse colour, ie 'road' but with an N?

I like Rowan best out of the 3. Rohan is a bit Riders of Rohan from Lord of the Rings....

Can I add Ruan as option no.4? [bugrin]

Roan Smile

Fishpond · 09/04/2012 04:19

Yes Jan you are correct!
Thanks for the two votes so far

Rowan

HappyCamel · 09/04/2012 04:53

Roan is pronounced rhone and is a description of an animal's colour. My dog is roan and tan.

Rohan is a clothing brand. I would pronounce it Ro-Hann. I understand your comment about your pronunciation but lots of people will see the name without hearing you say it so you or your dc will spend a lot of time correcting.

Rowan (pr. rowun) is a lovely name and the correct spelling IMO.

ApricotPoodle · 09/04/2012 05:13

HappyCamel said it all correct.

puzzletree · 09/04/2012 08:01

Hi Fishpond! It's tricky because i think all these have varying pronunciations. I'm lobbying for Rohan as a middle name as it works in India as well as UK- would be Ro-Han/Haan rather than Roh-an pronunciation but as a middle name I doubt it'll be said out loud much.
Rowan seems more unisex as a name, also can be pronounced Row (as in argument)-an. Roan could be either Ro-an or Roan.
So I'd just pick whichever spelling you like but be prepared to correct pronunciation!

Rowan

I love them all. I am particuarly fond of Rohan, when pronounced as Ro-Hann.Great name. That or Roan. I went to school with a lovely Roan.

Love Rowan too,but it's more popular.

You can't go wrong no matter what you choose imho.

RustyBear · 09/04/2012 10:01

There's a Roan at the school I work at, but it's pronounced ro-an, not like the horse colour. I like Rowan, but I tend to think of it as a girls' name, probably due to reading too much Antonia Forest...

FondleWithCare · 09/04/2012 11:25

Roan would get pronounced like groan without the g. Of the other two I prefer Rowan.

Janoschi · 09/04/2012 11:32

Roan pronounced as the colour is nice - think Gray, Scarlett etc. But I wouldn't automatically say Ro-an unless cued by you. I'd learn though so pick the one you like best :-)

Maiziemonkey · 09/04/2012 11:36

Rowan

Ephiny · 09/04/2012 15:36

I much prefer Rowan

TheSockPuppet · 09/04/2012 16:08

There was a boy in my ds's nursery called Roan (spelt like groan), and I loved the name :)

mum47 · 09/04/2012 16:11

I like Ro-han but think of Rowan as a girl's name. Live in Scotland tho, where it is more likely to be pronounced Row-an, as in the tree.

BuntyPenfold · 09/04/2012 19:09

Rowan, lovely name for a girl.

Rohan, for a boy.

UniS · 09/04/2012 19:13

Rowan- like the tree, boys name round here, tho I have heard of it as a girls names else where.

Roan, I imagine would get mispronounced and misspelt. Rohan reminds me of travel trousers and again gets misspelt and said.

Fishpond · 10/04/2012 00:24

Thanks everyone for the great input! Puzzle go for Rohan for your LO middle name! I did see it's meaning in Indian and it's quite lovely.

I still like all of them but will probably nix Rowan since it's more popular for girls (also why I'm not using Quinn which I equally like). So now between Roan and Rohan, and I like both!! So hard this naming malarky.

Rowan. My cocker spaniel is roan. The man of Rohan are from Lord of the Rings.

laptopcomputer · 10/04/2012 00:28

Rowan Williams. Rowan Atkinson :) I always think of it as a boys name
