Ethan is lovely. Much nicer than Finn.

Chateauneuf · 31/03/2012 10:33

Dylan and Ethan is a bit of a mouthful...

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 31/03/2012 11:11

Every second boy is called Finn, or so it seems on MN. Though I think Jude is the new Finn.

DairyNips · 31/03/2012 11:19

Grin not sure I'd necessarily use Ethan or Finn, just saying those are the names I like the sound of.. Still liking my Phoenix and Harrison atm...

I really like Harrison. Phoenix is still awful.

seeker · 31/03/2012 11:24

startail · 31/03/2012 11:26

Eden?

DairyNips · 31/03/2012 11:27

I think your assistance is needed on the Spike thread too,Seeker.Grin

DairyNips · 31/03/2012 11:28

Shock no way is Phoenix as bad as Spike!

OP posts:
IAmYourSingingTelegram · 31/03/2012 11:29

No it's not quite that bad.I'll give you that.

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 31/03/2012 11:31

I still can't imagine looking at a lovely newborn and calling him Phoenix though, but then I can't imagine naming a newborn 'Frank' either, and that seems to be fairly popular on MN.

DairyNips · 31/03/2012 11:33

Hmm Harrison is growing on me as a first name but I think dh prefers Phoenix... Hmm

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 31/03/2012 11:34

Harrison is very cool, and ages well. Phoenix isn't,and doesn't.

DairyNips · 31/03/2012 11:36

Iam Grin I appreciate your directness.

Nicholas might be too normal (weird though - in my mind, Miles is just about as normal as you can get!) but Nico isn't as a short.

Alexander shortened to Xander?

Rory?

DairyNips · 31/03/2012 11:59

I guess Nicholas and Alexander just remind me of people I went to school with.. I like names that are different to those of my generation perhaps. I don't see Miles as normal as I only know one IRL..

Rory just reminds me of the racing car!

We learned after ds1, never share the name with anyone in advance (especially MIL!). Their opinion does not count and only causes confusion!

I have a Felix, it's a bloody great name. There are worse things to be reminded of than a cat.

Phoenix is ok, Fenix - never.

Jnice · 31/03/2012 12:07

I love Nico and Xander.

Dylan is a top 20 name Confused

Nicholas was at 133 in 2010, with Nicolas way down at 269.

seeker · 31/03/2012 12:55

I do think "common" "normal" "boring" alll have different meanings when applied to names.

seeker · 31/03/2012 12:56

Otherwise people looking for unusual, one in a class names would be calling their children Trevor, Colin and Maureen.

doctordwt · 31/03/2012 13:19

Re. 'Nicholas is too normal' - well, thing is that right now Nicholas isn't normal at all. Right out of fashion. And that's names for you - all names are 'normal' to different people (with maybe a few exceptions) - what makes then unusual or not is just fashion.

Choosing a name because you want to reflect the fact that you are different and unusual - be really careful. There was once a time (early 70s?) when hordes of parents were very pleased with themselves for happening on the different, exotic and unusual name of Sharon for their DDs. Now that name is seen as totally unfashionable and really 'of that era' - largely because it was unusual until then. Plenty of Rachaels and Kates from that decade who are now very pleased not to have been 'unusual' as babies!

I think you're falling into that trap, especially with Phoenix. Because it isn't a classic name, it is likely to date, and thus end up more stereotyped and seen as uncool because it smacks of the try-too-hard choice of 2009-2012.

Give an unusual name by all means, but make it classic, or one with a special meaning to you, eg from literature. Avoid names of celebrities, or classic names spelled differently. Look at baby name lists and you will see what unusual names seem to be creeping into fashion. Remember when Ruby and Alfie were utterly unusual? Lovely names, but now they reference this decade.

There are lots of names that will never be in fashion, but will also never be foolish -

Struan
Barnabas
Fergus
Maxim
Roman
Jared
Raphael (Rafe)

DairyNips · 31/03/2012 13:30

I know Dylan is popular, I've already said so. There's another one in ds's class in fact although different spelling. Maybe I'm not being clear about what I mean by normal.. I just mean, quite boring, names I grew up with, not very exciting iyswim. I'm interested in the sound of names and what connotations they have for me personally. If I know a person called a certain name and I don't really like them then I just can't use that name. A lot of unpopular names at the moment are names I grew up with and therefore I can always think of someone who has that name so it puts me off.. I guess I want a name that is slightly unusual to me. Of course that's hard to guess as it'd be different for everyone Grin
