Stellan Grin a person has class, regardless of their name!

Well, let's hope your ds shares your mindset. They don't always, you know.I think imposing your will like this on a person who can't consent is not a good thing to do- it's perfectly possible to give a child an unusual name that is also not a potential burden.

DairyNips · 30/03/2012 11:09

Seeker - why are you so sure this name in particular will be a burden? It's not that unusual.. You should hear some of the names at ds's school! Our family tend to have slightly unusual names as a whole.

Not too sure but if you are going to choose that name Pheonix is best. Fenix would end up being pronounced Fennix and sound rather odd.

EightiesChick · 30/03/2012 11:11

If you like Beck, I wouldn't be put off by it being the name of an older child's friend. It's not like they will be together all the time. Not the same as there being 5 Becks in the same school class at all.

Whatever you do, don't use the Fenix spelling. I agree with earlier comments that it sounds like a prescription drug/medical appliance and also that it will be pronounced 'Fenn-ix' not 'Fee-nix'.

DairyNips · 30/03/2012 11:12

Also, I'm aware my son may not share my mindset. Ds1 and 2 couldn't be more different. There's no way to predict that though just as you can't predict he will be 'short and shy'. I have a very simple name, didn't stop me being extremely shy and uncomfortable as a child and I'm not sure my name would have helped or hindered tbh.

Thanks for all the comments regarding the spelling. I think I agree tbh. Personally I think Phoenix looks nicer as a name anyway. Just need to convince dh of that!

Arlo Guthrie -at the heart of the wave of protest songs against the Vietnam War and other causes of justice. Wrote / sang Alice's Restaurant.
Arlo ias a name s enjoying a bit of a moment, but hardly over-used.

Stellan · 30/03/2012 11:15

Just DON'T spell it Pheonix... which is even worse than Fenix.

DairyNips · 30/03/2012 11:16

Ah I see, thanks Blu I'd never heard of it. Will mull that one over Smile

Stellan - I didn't know you could spell it Pheonix?! No, it would be Phoenix..

OP posts:
Stellan · 30/03/2012 11:24

You can't - well, not really - but in 2010 4 of the 131 mums wanting to name their sons Phoenix got it wrong...

EasyOnTheChips · 30/03/2012 11:25

No. Fenix is dreadful, dreadful, dreadful.

DREADFUL.

thegreylady · 30/03/2012 11:28

Fenix just looks as though you cant spell!
How about Rowan or Gil[bert]?
Gabriel is nice too or Guy or Giles

jaffacakehips · 30/03/2012 11:29

Dairy I was just wondering why after having a Dylan and Miles you are now thinking of Phoenix? They are quite different names Grin IMHO. What about Orlando?

Sorry very noisy Blush Not that it matters but I thought Bertie with your DC's was really nice.

jaffacakehips · 30/03/2012 11:30

What about Rex? I was also going to suggest Gabriel and Gilbert.

peskimo · 30/03/2012 11:32

Wizard I reckon that the relative abundance of Phoenixes might be to do with it sounding a bit like Felix but being a bit more unusual. Its not always a good thing, like alternative 'out there' spellings.

I actually like Phoenix, a name like this could have a really positive personal meaning for a the parent.

seeker · 30/03/2012 11:32

I wish I could introduce you to my step nephew. He could tell you all about having a "unique, beautiful and poetic" name.

seeker · 30/03/2012 11:34

"I actually like Phoenix, a name like this could have a really positive personal meaning for a the parent."

Then the parent should change their own name. You are naming a person who cannot consent. You have a duty not to give that person a name that might make his life more difficult.

DairyNips · 30/03/2012 11:46

We just like slightly unusual names. Having said that Dylan is not that unusual, maybe should have checked it's popularity at the time! Phoenix just has nice connotations for us, of course there's the bird, then there are actors from our generation such as River who was pretty cool. More recently Tenacious D are releasing an album called 'Rize of the Fenix' Grin . I'm not saying we're naming our son after any one of these things, just that these are the things that spring to mind when we think of it.

Seeker I'm sorry if your nephew's name has caused him to have a bad experience. It doesn't necessarily mean all other children with slightly unusual names will have the same experience however. What is his name?

OP posts:
DairyNips · 30/03/2012 11:47

I really don't get why everyone likes Felix so much, it's the name of a cat food!

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 30/03/2012 11:51

It's awful. It doesn't go with your other boys names either. As for Fenix, words fail me...

peskimo · 30/03/2012 11:52

i've got a felix! - its spanish, and has historical associations for us.

seeker · 30/03/2012 11:52

Of course it doesn't. My own ds has a slightly unusual name.

My nephew's name is Tom. He changed it when he left primary school and refused to go to Secondary school until his parents dealt with the formalities. I don't want to say his name to be in case by some freak chance he could be identified. But it was a name that I am sure people on here would have told his parents was beautiful and unique and he will love and which will make him memorable. He is not, by the way , and never has been, a shy retiring child- he is a musician and a performer, handsome and confident and happy to be "different". But his name was a burden.

DairyNips · 30/03/2012 11:55

seeker I'm sorry he's had a hard timeSad I really do understand what you're saying. I was never popular or memorable myself. I know how it feels to be bullied etc. I just know that kids can pick on you for any reason and it doesn't necessarily have to be your name. As I said, my name is very normal and short and pretty boring tbh. Hope he's getting on ok now.
