Beatrice. We really like the name but want to avoid anything that whiffs of pretentiousness. Thanks

Not at all, lovely name

lisaro · 17/02/2012 23:55

No, not at all - was my lovely auntie.

MadMonkeys · 18/02/2012 09:43

No, not at all. My very working class great grandma was a beatrice, and she was about as far from pretentious as you can get Smile

jaffacakehips · 18/02/2012 10:04

Not at all!

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 18/02/2012 10:14

No, it's definitely not pretentious...

It is common and popular, and I must admit, I really don't get why. I don't like it - out of all the lovely girls names out there ... Beatrice......? Hmm

fivefoottwowitheyesofblue · 18/02/2012 10:15

Not pretentious. Not a fan of it myself and it is also getting v v popular

CecilyP · 18/02/2012 11:25

No, not at all. It will probably make the top 100 this year. Now, if you were to call her Eugenie...

ragged · 18/02/2012 11:32

I think of it as posh. Nowt wrong with posh, mind.
And very very old-fashioned.
I don't like names starting with B, too.

jandymaccomesback · 19/02/2012 19:13

It may have been posh when it was given to Princess Beatrice, but it isn't now.

My Mums name. She was a FLT driver worked permanent night shifts and was a shop steward! Nothing pretentious about her Smile

usingapseudonym · 19/02/2012 19:36

Depends on your social circle. If they will be public school fodder you are fine. We were considering it (and I still wish I'd gone for it as I just love the name) but my family and many mums from the local mums and tods think it is and were relieved we didn't.

Still wish we did though!

othersideofchannel · 20/02/2012 10:04

I know lovely Beatrices as well as some rather unpleasant ones. So imo it is not the name but the character what makes someone nice or pretentious.

Ihatepeas · 20/02/2012 11:11

Not at all i love it.. gorgeous!

miaowmix · 20/02/2012 11:16

No, it's beautiful.
It is a bit pretentious if you pronounce it 'Bee-ah-tree-chay' (Italian style) as a girl at my school did. It was her middle name and she wasn't remotely Italian.

AlmaMartyr · 20/02/2012 11:39

Not pretentious at all, lovely name.

MrsBovary · 20/02/2012 19:01

Not a bit.

CecilyP · 20/02/2012 22:01

Lol, definitely pretentious to insist on pronouncing it the Italian way if you're not Italian. Otherwise it's absolutely fine.

3boysgirlontheway · 21/02/2012 11:42

I don't even know what a pretentious name is, someone fill me in please?

LouMacca · 21/02/2012 12:35

No not at all. Now Eugenie on the other hand.........

CharlieBoo · 21/02/2012 12:39

No love it, would pick it in a flash for another dd. I didn't used to like it but has really grown on me.

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 22/02/2012 01:38

No, it's lovely! I thought you were going to say Hortensia or similar.

Its lovely. If she thinks its pretentious when she grows up she can shorten it to Bea, which I think is very hip
