Just wondering what the posh Londoners & jet setters are calling their new babies as these are always the names that trickle into the main stream in a few months. A friend of mine is a midwife in a private London hospital & she said the following are really gaining popularity

Boy

  • Arlo
-Otto -Casper

Girls
-Fleur
-Ottolie(never heard this before!!!)
-Florence

She said in the upper class William, Edward still used commonly for boys as middle names. Charlotte, Isabella, Poppy for girls

Can you add anymore up & coming names?I'm sure there are plenty of threads like this I'm just too lazy to look!!!) Find it fascinating & I love the way high society types get away with names the majority of us find somewhat bizarre!!!

I used to babysit an Ottilie and no-one had heard of the name back then. She was known as Lottie. Now 18 and an absolute stunner and lovely girl to boot, so I love the name!

billgrangersrisotto · 09/01/2012 19:40

How do you pronounce ottilie?

rachel234 · 09/01/2012 19:42

Ott-ill-ie. Lovely name imo.

billgrangersrisotto · 09/01/2012 19:43

I agree. Lovely!

rachel234 · 09/01/2012 19:43

Or, in German, Ott-ee-lie (emphasis on ee).

BeattieBow · 09/01/2012 19:45

I always wonder whether the emphasis is in Ottilie. Is it on the till - O-TILL-ie or does it rhyme with Utterly? I prefer the former.

KatyJ26 · 09/01/2012 19:50

this made me think of Ottilie-botterly, the well known butter!

guinealady · 09/01/2012 20:01

I used to work in media, but a bit out of touch with it now...what people I knew were calling their kids in the last few years included:

Boys
Teddy
Oscar
Harry
Max
Sam

Girls
Belle
Rosie (a lot of Rosies as I seem to recall!)
Grace
Isabella

..those are all the ones I can remember!

cakeismysaviour · 09/01/2012 20:04

I only know one 'hip' London couple and they have a toddler called Stanley and they now also have a new baby girl called Orla.

vitaminC · 09/01/2012 20:10

Beattie in French it's pronounced oh-tee-LEE, with the emphasis on the last syllable.

vitaminC · 09/01/2012 20:10

Cake Orla is stunning :o

cakeismysaviour · 09/01/2012 20:14

I think so too. :)

tethersend · 09/01/2012 20:20

I live in hip east London, and the names you can hear being bellowed across the playground at the moment are:

Orla (LOADS of them)
Alice
Agatha
Evelyn
Leif
Elvis
Cosmo (but no Dibs as yet Wink)
Theo

And some other more leftfield ones which would make me instantly identifiable!

YummyMummybee · 09/01/2012 20:44

Leif as in leaf?? That is seriously cool!!!
I love cosmos but really not sure if I could call my boy after my fave cocktail???

tethersend · 09/01/2012 20:52

Cosmo and Dibs Grin

mrsshears · 09/01/2012 21:02

I used to love cosmo and dibs Smile

PercyFilth · 09/01/2012 21:12

Sorry, I must disagree that Florence is "timeless and will never date". It is faddy and very much of the moment.

DharmaCeutical · 09/01/2012 21:13

am also an east london-dweller in mee-jah and have heard the following in the last couple of years..

Carmen
Lotte
Wanda
Odette

Wallace
Cassius (x3!)
Bertrand (Bertie)
Wilfred

I love Wanda but at every scan DC2 seems determined to be a boy.

BigusBumus · 09/01/2012 21:20

I think Flora is way cooler than Florence.

I don't know anyone else that likes Miles or has a Miles apart from me and I've always been very proud I called my pfb that. I hope it doesn't become too popular! (ds Miles is 9).

Gapants · 09/01/2012 21:33

In my trendy mates circle I give you--

Girls
Edie
Summer
Bess
Florence (nn-Floss)
Martha

Boys
Arlo
Fergus
Zefi
Dex
Max

yummy Have you decided then? Have you settled on India?

shoobidoo · 09/01/2012 21:42

We're in South London and I've heard these recently:

Agnes
Beatrice
Dorothy
Edith
Elsie
Evelyn
Florence
Iris
Mabel
Nora
Olive
Rose

Albert
Cecil
Ernest
Ezra
Reginald/Reggie
Stanley
Sidney
Quentin
Winston

Agree about cutesy names falling out of favour, I think people are after more 'solid' names.

YummyMummybee · 09/01/2012 21:47

Gapants sure have-India Mary it is!!x oooh Summer is beautiful, yep my the mnidwife friend was saying Arlo was huge alright in her hospital

When I hear orla I am afraid I hear orla meaning oral sex. Orla is used as a euphemism for oral quite commonly. You cannot saddle a little girl with that!
