I'm due to give birth to 3rd baby (second DD). We'd picked Giulia (DH is Italian) and then he changed his mind as usual and loved Elisabetta. I was ok with this but Elizabeth is the name of one of my friend's dd's and when I mentioned it to her yesterday, I could tell she wasn't keen on me using the name too (fair enough).

So now we are kind of stuck! What do you think of Eloisa, Clara, Giulia (I still like this but DH undecided)? Or please any other ideas?

Elisabetta is not the same name as Elizabeth, it has a completely different sound. I know it's essentially the same name in different languages but it is very different and fi you like it I would go with it. Your firned is silly if she cares that much.

However I like Giulia better.

JestersHat · 07/01/2012 10:22

I think you should use Elisabetta if you like it. Elizabeth-type names are fairly popular and it's not that surprising if two friends each come up with one.

I also like Clara, and Eloisa is OK too. Not so keen on Giulia.

yawningmonster · 07/01/2012 10:23

what about Chiara

EssentialFattyAcid · 07/01/2012 10:23

I like Gretel and Violet or maybe Chiara
but actually I agree with Eglu, Elisabetta is different enough to Elizabeth - stick with it.

MrsOzz · 07/01/2012 10:29

What's your friend's Elizabeth known as? Is it always Elizabeth, Lizzie, Beth, Libby - the list is endless!

What are you planning on calling your Elisabetta? Because if Elzabeth is always a Lizzie and you are planning on Betty or Elsa then I don't think there is too much of a problem.

WhatstheScenario · 07/01/2012 10:31

Your friend is being ridiculously precious if she genuinely is pissed off about this. Name yor child what you want!

Elisabetta much nicer than Guilia, btw

PurplePidjin · 07/01/2012 10:34

bradbourne · 07/01/2012 10:47

Am I right in thinking "Giulia" is pronaounced "Julia"? A beautiful name, if so.

RobinSparkles · 07/01/2012 11:17

I'd stick with Elisabetta. It's different from Elizabeth and your friend doesn't own the name, she has no right to grumble.

You might regret not going for the name you truly wanted.

Go for Elisabetta, it's pretty! Smile

PercyFilth · 07/01/2012 11:25

bradbourne Yes, it is Julia. There is no letter 'j' in Italian.

Jeezimacasalinga · 07/01/2012 11:27

Thanks everyone. I already have an Elena so I feel Elisa is too similar, though I do like it. Giulia is pronounced Julia and it's my preferred name, my dh suggested it and it grew on me, now he's gone off it! Can't have Sofia either, as my brother has a Sophie...argh! I know that Elisabetta is different to Elizabeth, but I guess people can't help how they feel about 'copying' names, it's a subject that comes up a lot here, and I just don't feel it's worth really upsetting someone if I can come up with something else Smile

Your df does not own the name Elizabeth or any variations or diminutives of it.
There are not enough names on the planet for each of the 7 billion of us to have unique names your friend will have to suck it up. Dies she really think she isn't going ever to come across another Elizabeth Beth Bethan Bethany Lizzie etc.
Discussing it in advance gives people the opportunity to try to put off names or steer you to their preferred names,
I never discussed names with anyone but my dh and I would advise people to do the same. My dh has a horrendous family middle names for all the boys from his dggf, and his dgm wanted us to continue to tradition but we never discussed it and needless to say the tradition has died out. Obviously if I had loved the name it would have been different.
Wait till the baby is born name her/him and present them as "their name" . Your child your choice of name.
Anyway you never know dh may change his mind again before the birth.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 07/01/2012 11:45

Perhaps it's time to put your foot down with your DH instead and remind him that it's a JOINT decision, he's had a lot of consideration on this already, HE chose Giulia and now YOU like it and it's staying??

littlemisssarcastic · 07/01/2012 11:45

Love Giulia!!

MerryMarigold · 07/01/2012 11:48

How about Katerina? Same kind of sound...(not sure if it's Italian!)

Is Nina Italian?

I like Clara best of all your names.

whostolemyname · 07/01/2012 11:51

I think your friend is just annoyed because Elisabetta is nicer than Elizabeth Grin and therefore agree you should still use it! Otherwise

Daniela
Alessandra
Mariana
Oriana

Collision · 07/01/2012 11:51

But there are so many nicknames for Elizabeth....

Beth
Bett
Libby
Eliza
Liz
Lizzy

Would she be known as Elisabetta or did you have a nn in mind?

Gabriella
Isabella
Romilly
Ottilie

are my current favourite girl names.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 07/01/2012 11:52

Marissa I love.

olefina · 07/01/2012 11:54

How about Elsa, Eloisa, Louisa, Giulietta (nn Etta if you want a shortening).

Giulia is lovely, as is Elisabetta, and I think quite different from Elizabeth. As others have said if your pal isn't going to use the full form either then it really doesn't matter, there are loads of names with Elizabeth as their root and your pal can't have dibs on them all.

HappyHippyChick · 07/01/2012 11:55

I love Giulia!

olefina · 07/01/2012 11:56

Libby as a nn is beautiful, and I think whostolemyname has hit the nail on the head, agree Elisabetta is far prettier than Elizabeth

gazzalw · 07/01/2012 12:01

Personally think that Elisabetta is no much more poetic and beautiful than Elizabeth so go for it....

Eloisa beatiful too......

Rascal79 · 07/01/2012 12:05

How about Arabella or Isabella?

3boysgirlontheway · 07/01/2012 12:14

You so do not have to pick another name, your "friend" is being anything but a friend!
