What is it about nicknames?

Why does nearly every bloody poster on the names section agonise over a nickname for their kid?

Just give the child the name you like. If it has a nickname you like too, then use it. If not, don't.

I mean, the other day, somebody was worrying that Julia would be shortened to Julie. It won't! Unless you want it too.

My dd has a nn as her actual name

MardyBra · 07/01/2012 00:36

Mind you, I should have hidden baby names years ago. My eggs are well past their use-by date. They are addled. What do I care what you all call your kids.

Can we also moan about the EmergencyI'mPanickingAboutNameThreads and you click and they're 12 weeks or summat.

Mardy Grin

I think the interweb has birthed a bit of a monster when it comes to baby names.

I have a lovely RL name but it is always shortened to the first two letters - as yet this hasn't caused my parents and lasting trauma Wink

ChaosTrulyReigns · 07/01/2012 00:41

It's not FO is it?

Grin
Honeydragon · 07/01/2012 00:42

Oh I love the panicing about name threads. I go in and utterly fuck them up when i tell 'em dh named both the babies. About a fortnight before my due date he came up with a name and that was that.

Honeydragon · 07/01/2012 00:43

Chaos no it's

Ho Wink

MardyBra · 07/01/2012 00:43

Both my kids had names universally loathed by the grandparents. We played name chicken and left it as close as possible to the 6 week registration deadline to decide. In the end, they were grateful we'd chosen names at all.

Some of ours weren't named for about a week after birth.

The world is still an oblate spheroid. Wink

startail · 07/01/2012 00:45

I don't think of my name as a nn, it's just the name I've always been called.
DD has it as her second name. She generally doesn't have a nn.
DD2 is very particular about her nn and how it is spelt ( her choice at about 8 and not how I'd spell it).

MardyBra · 07/01/2012 00:47

It just seems that everyone has to choose a name AND A nickname these days. Hmm

dd was registered on the last day the registrar was quite excited to see a baby over a week old.

MiL hated ds's name, she called him anything but his actual name until he was three months old and dh finally went nuclear. She denies all now, of course Grin

yellowraincoat · 07/01/2012 00:48

I have been getting pissed off about this too. It's so...so...ugh, I don't know what it is. "i was thinking blahface with blah as a nickname, is that twee enough???"

Just give your child a fucking name, stop agonising over it, you witless fucks.

Sorry I'm drunk.

MardyBra · 07/01/2012 00:53

Please don't tell all the others on the Paul McKenna diet thread.

Am I allowed wine even though I went off on a tangent on your thread, sorry Mardy ?

yellowraincoat · 07/01/2012 00:57

I'm not on a diet, I'll drink all the wine.

Honeydragon · 07/01/2012 01:00

Aren't nicknames acquired rather than given?

MardyBra · 07/01/2012 01:01

Do what you like...
Finds another bottle in the fridge and gets out corkscrew.
I'm multitasking and debating names for female genitalia on another thread now.
