What is it about nicknames?

Why does nearly every bloody poster on the names section agonise over a nickname for their kid?

Just give the child the name you like. If it has a nickname you like too, then use it. If not, don't.

I mean, the other day, somebody was worrying that Julia would be shortened to Julie. It won't! Unless you want it too.

Don't think me a mad stalker Shiney, but your DD has the name DS1 would have had, if he was a girl.

My brother was determined I had made the name up.

hohohoshedittant · 07/01/2012 02:29

I have a very short name and always wanted a longer name so I could have a nn. To spare my children the same childhood trauma I'll always try and pick a name that also has a shortening I like. If it turns out we don't use it then fine, but just in case. I also find some people always shorten everyones name so you end up with 'Nat' 'Saaahhh' or 'Rhi' instead of Natasha, Sarah or Rhiannon as you intended.

I love the name Leonie.

CumpyGrunt · 07/01/2012 02:37

I noted it, a while back when I saw you mention it.

I only know of one other person that has used it.

DS1 will be 15 this year, so it was quite a while ago I wanted to use it.

flamegirl77 · 07/01/2012 03:55

Children should get a say in their nickname. There's little enough they have control over. I have a long name and absolutely wouldn't tolerate any shortening of it when I was growing up.

I really cannot understand the people who get so stressed about nicknames before the baby is born, then get really angry that the child's grandparent/teacher/whatever calls the child by their proper name or a different nickname/shortened version.

I always thought nicknames were something that was acquired. And even then nicknames don't HAVE to be a shortened version of the name.

CumpyGrunt · 07/01/2012 15:17

Don't think I know you Shiney, the person I know whose daughter has that name, has 2 girls.

diddl · 07/01/2012 16:01

I agree.

We chose a name we liked & never thought about nns/shortenings as we didn´t intend to shorten the name or give a nn.

Daughter was called PoppyLou for a while-absolutely nothing to do with her name but somehow Poppet evolved to PoppyLouConfused

My favourite with regard to nicknames is 'DS is called Thomas but never Tom because I don't like it and I DON'T ALLOW IT.'

Good luck with that when he's fifteen.
