Dated or stuck up???

Hi Girls
I posted another thread yesterday about Mary. We have decided maybe to used or 2nd choice name and add Mary on the end so our name now is
India Mary.
Tbh I love both names but we are Irish & live here so India would be extremely uncommon over here. What is the general consensus re India in the UK I mentioned it on the other thread and other mns said it has reached its peak, used by people who wanted to appear aristocratic and is now dated. A poster also mentioned it may also come accross a bit chav due to it being a place name

I really appreciate any feedback as neither hubby or I have ever met or heard of an India. Btw we went to Mauritius on honeymoon so we have a reason to have an India(it is in the Indian ocean after all lol). Would love to know if you know any Indias or please let me know your honest opinion.

I absolutely detest India as a first name, sorry. I would absolutely stick with Mary in your shoes, it's underused at the moment and lovely. I'm not sure how India would go down in Ireland. Where I'm from they'd probably think you were a bit bonkers Wink

Fisharefriendsnotmincepies · 05/01/2012 20:16

I wouldn't. I do think it's a bit chav. Think Mary is fab though

YummyMummybee · 05/01/2012 20:18

Thanks GML-I posted this to get a 2nd opinion, so far our list comprises of Molly Catherine,
Mairbel Catherine
India Mary

I think India is so unusual but is it too much so??? Is it chav or trying to appear high society? Have never met an India I have only heard of India Hicks the designer...

I think it's pretty and I personally think it's a waste of energy to worry about other people labelling names, as what's seen as 'chavvy' (horrible, classist phrase!) or 'trying too hard' will change all the time. It's much nicer than a lot of the names favoured on the baby names board at the moment!

puzzletree · 05/01/2012 20:25

I love the name India, use it if you love it too, it is a valid name and it doesn't matter what other people think.

lljkk · 05/01/2012 20:27

I know one India who is a lovely little girl (6?) and not the least bit "Chav".

Honestly, MNers ideas of what is "Chav" Shocks me , sometimes.
Chlamidia, Chardonnay, Jack Daniel, Tequila, Patella, you can reasonably hang Chav tags on those, but otherwise there has to be a leetle room for unconventional names to still qualify as tasteful.

Is India Knight a Chav? Her sister dated my cousin's crazy husband, so maybe so.

latrucha · 05/01/2012 20:28

If you've got a good line for when everyone ask you, 'Why India?' go for it, because they will.

Not my cup of tea, really, but it's not my baby. If you love it, that's what matters.

It is a bit of a name that was trendy a while back, though.

ArtSingh · 05/01/2012 20:29

My dad is Indian and so the name India seems a bit weird to me... almost like calling your child 'England' Grin

WhingingNinja · 05/01/2012 20:29

i don't really "do" modern names like this but i really llike India and similarly arizona.

Though i also adore maribel.

I agree with Flame that you shouldn't care what other think, but sadly people do make rude comments and you are obviously concerned. And you know your community better than any of us.

tigana · 05/01/2012 20:33

I like India. DH knows an India (Indy), in early 20's, nowhere near what could possibly be called 'chav'. Likewise India Knight. Plus, who cares?! Different areas have different name trends, so what is "so last year" in one city will be peaking in another and really rare in another. No sudden splurge of indias here..all isabelles.
Check the top 50/100/300 names if you want to just put your mind to rest she won't be one of 14 in her class!

puzzletree · 05/01/2012 20:36

ArtSingh my dad is Indian too, funny how we react differently to the name!

littlepie · 05/01/2012 20:39

I know an Indigo who goes by the name Indie, I think I prefer that to India. I like India much more than Mary though!

YummyMummybee · 05/01/2012 20:56

Thanks a million girls-its just that in Ireland we don't know whats chav or not. Names trending in the UK are different to ours. I just don't want to come accross as pretentious lol!!! So now we have narrowed it down to
Molly Catherine
Maribel Catherine - what do you think of Maribelle spelling?
India Mary
Kinda loving India- Art Singh- Erin is the Irish for Ireland and is very popular amongst the ex-pat Irish community i shall have you know lol x

If you like Maribel, maybe you'll like Marisol, which is Spanish. I think it's pretty and it contains Mary.

reelingintheyears · 05/01/2012 21:09

I think India's ok if you have a connection with the place but don't know why anyone would call their child it otherwise.

ballstoit · 05/01/2012 21:12

DCs have lots of friends with chav names. I wouldn't lump India in that group as it's too classic IMO.

Don't know about Ireland but Molly is very popular where I am (East Midlands).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/01/2012 21:14

Don't like it, sorry.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 05/01/2012 21:16

I was the one who said it was passé on the other thread and I stand by that. I don't think it's chav, but clearly just because some people do think it is, it doesn't then follow that everyone with the name also is...?! Confused It doesn't quite work like that!

Anyway, yes, I think it has had its moment in the sun amongst a certain circle of society and is now on the decline as they move onto other outré names. Wink

My vote is for Maribel. It would be for Mary, but given that you're in Ireland and want something a little bit different, Mary probably isn't the way forward!

JestersHat · 05/01/2012 21:38

Maribelle Catherine is very nice. Molly too nicknamey, but it's a nickname for Mary so how about Mary Catherine, with Molly as nickname? Personally I'm not keen on India for the reasons in your OP.

YummyMummybee · 06/01/2012 00:47

I know Mary Catherine with nn Molly would be the obvious choice but I also was given two names and a nn at birth and the nn stuck & caused awful problems during my youth-I was once almost refused a passport as I could not prove I was always called my nn & my mom had to fax old school reports to the passport office as my childhood passport was issued in my nn-major faux pas on my parents part so really want to give LO one name that sticks X

Maribel/ Maribelle is nice do you think there would be pronunciation errors e.g Marybelle and Marabelle or Mirabelle etc x or do you think its one that could be easily mispelled?

OP posts:
yellowraincoat · 06/01/2012 00:50

Not keen on India.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 06/01/2012 01:12

I wouldn't use India.

I still like Molly Catherine or Mary Catherine.

YummyMummybee · 06/01/2012 01:19

Thanks girls so it looks like out of our choices

-Mary is very popular as it is
-Molly Catherine also a popular choice
-Maribel is also one that alot of posters think is very nice-just wondering is it better spelt Maribelle??
-India not so much-I am glad of the honest opinions as I keep repeating its not a name we are familiar with at all so its great to know what connotations it holds for people in the know X
