Three syllabel Girls Names - with nice shortening

I'm not bothered by popularity. I have a popular name and I like it.

I love the names Isabel, Olivia, Amelia, but would not use as I'd run the risk of Izzy, Livvie or Milly. I don't like the ie or y ending.

I like a classic strong name.

I have a lot of name associations, so although nice names, I would not use Annabel, Verity, Catherine, Christina, Susannah or Violet. I just can't get past the people I know with these names. Silly I know.

Certain names that trend on here, such as Allegra, I consider too posh, and it doesn't fit with common DH and I.

Hope I have not offended everyone.

So far we have one name:

Helena

Any other suggestions?

As in can't use, someone very close had that name, and is no longer with us, and the reason is rather tragic, and to me it will always be her name. But I do love the name. So thank you.

Deborah - Your name is Deborah, Deborah. It never suited you. I love this name, and the Pulp song, but its very 70s, and there is the Debbie (ie ending) nn.

Willow - love this name, but a good friend has used it. My parents think it's a bit hippyish.

Why can't you just tell your DH you are having Penelope and tough shit? Penelope is beautiful and Penny is nice, and we are all tired and losing the will to live now.

shouldnotbehere · 08/12/2011 12:31

belgo - thank you for agreeing, it's nice to know I'm not being rediculous over my no r's. Neither me or my brother could pronounce rs.

Thanks for the reminder. Fernanda is not us, it's just a bit too much, and I start singing the Abba Fernando song. Smokie Living Next Door To Alice, have also ruined the name Alice for me, too by the way.

Iona is still on the list...

You are right, I tried to discuss names with DH last night, and he was very dismissive, he said he'd had enough of my names obsession for this week, and could we leave it till weekend.

Will write the names out for him - thank you.

Due mid July.

Iona is gorgous. So what is the issue with just having Iona then, or are you hoping for more choice?

As you put it, what makes your heart sing shouldnotbehere..you must have 1 name..1 tiny teeny secret name that you love that isn't 3 syllables?

I love the name Faye, it's so gentle, and makes me think of fairies. However it's too soft, and my head is saying three syllable names go nicer with our surname. I also love Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde.

The other name that makes my heart sing is Lillian. Lillian, not Lily.

I've always liked my name, Katherine (nn Kate), and want to choose a classic name, that's not too fussy, and not ending in -ie.

FellatioNelson · 08/12/2011 12:45

Fay is beautiful! And last time I looked, not at all over-used. It's an elegant classic. Not too saoft, not girlie or cutesy. Have it. HAVE IT BEFORE I COME AND SHOOT YOU.

Iona Faye also sounds lovely

FellatioNelson · 08/12/2011 12:46

In fact Faye Katherine is lovely.

FellatioNelson · 08/12/2011 12:47

But Lillian will def. get shortened to Lily or Lil (yuk)
