Marmite names which MNetters don't like..!!

It seems this topic board has loads of MN's 'marmite' names. Loads of threads along the lines off, 'DC would of been' or 'Names you Love.'.

...so I was just wondering, which names don't you like and why?

Why does it matter so much what OTHER people's preferences are - thankfully we all have different tastes and wear different clothes, prefer different food and give our kids different names.

There are lots and lots of names I wouldnt' choose personally because I don't like them, but what is the point of listing them here Hmm?

mopsyflopsy · 06/12/2011 13:27

I don't hate any name. I might hate certain people, though Smile.

Yes, I do like some names more than others. But I agree with hellokitty - what is the point of us all listing names that we're not keen on - who will benefit from such a list?

HarrySantaatemygoldfish · 06/12/2011 13:27

Anything pretentiously ohwe'resomiddleclarsswhenreallyweain;t wanky.

Like Caspar or Monty.

mopsyflopsy · 06/12/2011 13:28

See, I love Caspar and Monty Grin. Thankfully our tastes are all different!

tammytoby · 06/12/2011 13:32

This thread will end in tears....

but if you insist: I'm not keen on Archie, Alfie, Charlie, Ellie, cutesy type names, nor do I like Jayden/Kayden/Brayen type names, nor of lots of other names actually....

(I too rather like Caspar and Monty)

Iggly · 06/12/2011 13:34

I've seen plenty of names on here that I think Hmm

Especially the poncy ones

HarrySantaatemygoldfish · 06/12/2011 13:36

I can't stand poncey names either, the ones where people are trying to show how posh they are. Especially when yelled in gutteral estuary or thick local twang. You just look like a dick.

Proper posh call their kids Lucy and William.

shouldnotbehere · 06/12/2011 13:40

I don't like Hugo, Orlando, Clemency or, Arrabella.

tammytoby · 06/12/2011 13:41

I'm neither posh nor British (am German) but I still love names that are considered 'posh' by some in the UK - I must have a 'poncy' taste Grin. Hopefully I don't look too much like a dick Confused.

tammytoby · 06/12/2011 13:42

And, why do some of you have such STRONG negative feelings about other people's choice of names?

tummytickler · 06/12/2011 14:14

I have some pet hates of perfectly 'nice' names, that I just strongly dislike for no reason. These are

Amy, Hannah, Anna, Emma, Millie, Maisy, Samantha, Sophie and Lily to name a few.
Mark, Marcus, Leo, Finley, Finlay, Paul, Archie, Alfred, Noah.

I don't know why people should be offended - we aren't going to all like the same names, and if you don't like the subject matter, don't read the thread.

MamaLazarou · 06/12/2011 14:16

Amelie - makes me shudder - reminds me of that awful film

Jack - THE most boring name ever invented

Ella - not a whole name by itself, it's the ending of lots of real names

cakeoclock · 06/12/2011 14:22

Too many to mention!

MamaLazarou I forgot Amelie - I don't like that either, or Theo, as dh just reminded me!

Bertie is lovely Sargesaweyes

MamaLazarou · 06/12/2011 14:34

I adore Bertie!

PoppadumPreach · 06/12/2011 14:35

tammytoby i am so with you on Kayden/Jayden/Brayden - they're just hideous.

the other one which i think is just such pretentious twattery of the highest order is Lysander.

I really do think that some people really believe that by giving their kids names like this makes them more special. Someone recently wanted to know if "Arcadian" was acceptable - that just screams out "middle class trying so hard".

rachel234 · 06/12/2011 14:39

I honestly don't HATE any names, but I find many very dull and/or overused.

I also think a lot of people who choose names described by some as 'poncy' do so simply because they love the names. They do not necessarily choose a name 'just to appear' different. I too happen to prefer elegant, classic names that aren't overused - some of them might be considered 'poncy', but I still love them Smile.

Montsti · 06/12/2011 14:42

I'm not keen on most "in/faddy" names and also nicknamey/cutesy/surnamey/hyphenated names. Also there seem to be a lot of "sameish" girls names around....Lilly, Tilly, Milly, Molly, Holly, Polly etc.. Ava, Eva, Evie, Emily, Amy, Amelia, Emilia, Amelie, Annabel, Isobel, Arabella/Isabella/Annabella/Ella/Bella/Elle/Ellie which, although pretty kind of blend into one...

It seems to be increasingly fashionable to find an unusual name which I find a little pretentious and possibly unfair for the child (particularly boys as for some reason I think girls can carry slightly more unusual names..). I understand if people genuinely like a certain name which happens to be unusual but find it odd that people seem very anti certain names just because of popularity (as if a reflection on them) even if they love a certain name...Go with the name you love whether it's popular or unusual!

Personally I like classic, timeless, "stand-alone" names such as Oliver, William, Benjamin, Charlotte etc...many mumsnetters seem to be anti such names due to their popularity. IMO you should choose your favourite name whether popular or not otherwise you might regret it especially when in a few years time different names are Top 10 etc...

Anyway we all have different tastes and opinions and I have been labelled a conformist on this website for my choice!

The worst name in my opinion is Noah.

It sounds like someone farting down a pipe.

Montsti · 06/12/2011 14:44

But I love Bertie! Problem is I love "full" names on BC and didn't like the options, but Bertie is the most gorgeous name!
