Marmite names which MNetters don't like..!!

It seems this topic board has loads of MN's 'marmite' names. Loads of threads along the lines off, 'DC would of been' or 'Names you Love.'.

...so I was just wondering, which names don't you like and why?

I don't like 'full versions' of alot of names, eg Benjamin (I like just Ben), Maximillian, Archibald etc. Especially if the BC name is never used!

I don't like old man names apart from Albert. I also think some names are boring; Edward and James. I also dislike Sebastian and very long names. Just personal taste though. I would always say 'that's nice' when introduced to a baby with those above names. Theres no excuse to be rude to someone's face!

I once sat in a restaurant next to a very blahhhhdeeeee couple with foghorn voices (so I wasn't earwigging). They were discussing their 3 kids - Tiger, Peregrine and I must have blocked out the last one. I almost fell off my chair laughing. The fact that the waiters flies were down and his red shirt was dangling out didn't help the situation.

wahwahwah · 08/12/2011 13:19

I wonder if anyone has ever been named 'Marmite'?

picnicbasketcase · 08/12/2011 13:32

So far my name, DP's name and DD's names have been listed at hated ones on this thread. Just need DS's to appear to get the full house. Grin

hellokitty123 · 08/12/2011 13:59

" I can't think of any name I detest quite as much as that one. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that if someone tells me they have a child called that I instantly write them off. "

Really Shock?

See, I also dislike many names, in fact I really only love a handful of names, but I hope that I'd never 'write someone off' based purely on their name. In fact, I think it is lovely that we have different tastes - makes life much more interesting. I'd hate it if everyone else used 'my' favourite names Grin.

Haha my name has been mentioned twice alreadyWink

Can I add to my list

Guy
Quentin
Barnaby
Tarquin

Not that I give a damn what anyone else calls their baby

tammytoby · 08/12/2011 15:15

effingwots, you've just mentioned my ds's name (and it is not Tarquin which I hate too!) and, with my dd's name being higher up the thread, both kids' names are now officially 'hated' on mumsnet Smile.

But, as others have said, should we even care if others hate our choices as chances are we'll hate their choices - thankfully so as name diversity makes life more interesting!

Dragonwoman · 08/12/2011 15:41

Isn't Prince Harry Henry on his BC?

nicknamenotinuse · 08/12/2011 15:46

My children's names are all on here...oops. Grin

NotADudeExactly · 08/12/2011 16:29

Olivia! All thanks to the world's most despicanle co-worker. I know it's popular but every time I hear it I think "bitch".

Also anything that was intended to sound sophisticated but actually says "my parents are in desperate need of an education. Like "Sophisticated" - currently being taught by my extremely good at keeping a straight face mother.

NotADudeExactly · 08/12/2011 16:30

... And of course Olivia was in fact despicable, stupid iPad!

101North · 08/12/2011 16:35

LaFille - perhaps you should just list the names you do like Xmas Grin

Is 'Richard' a marmite name? I can't decide whether i love it or not.

LaFilleSurLePont · 08/12/2011 16:40

I forgot Beatrice and Scarlett.

I do like Richard though.Grin

youtalkintomeunderthemiseltoe · 08/12/2011 16:41

I don't really hate them but names i would never ever entertain myself are Tegan, Kaitlyn, Megan and Madison for boys Kayden, Jayden, Brodie, Taylor etc also Edie, Noah Connie.

My baby names have come up a lot on this thread, not all just some Grin

Ragwort · 08/12/2011 16:45

Richard is a lovely name; agree that some of those 70s names need a come back, lots of names that you never hear any more (including mine Xmas Grin).

What about straightforward names like Susan, Jane, Mary, Sally, Susannah, Sarah, Melanie, Katherine (do doubt that one is due for a comeback) - haven't heard of those for ages. Or for boys - David, John, Peter? Or are they all considered too dull - in fact they would be quite original these days !

Dragonwoman · 08/12/2011 16:49

Am I right in thinking that Kaitlyn is supposed to be pronounced 'cashleen' ?

Ipomegranate · 08/12/2011 17:08

Neither of my DC's names have come up, even though a couple of friends told me they hated DS's name before he was born - they asked me what names I was thinking of then v rudely gave me their opinion!

They both went on to give their own DC names I didn't like but being the nice person I am I passed no comment, just smiled inwardly.

bigkidsdidit · 08/12/2011 17:26

Sarge I have a Bertie (but we went with the full Albert on bc) too and he is mostly called Bert now Confused poor lad! Sometimes I hear myself saying it in public and think people nearby must by thinking to themselves "fucking hell, there's a little baby called Bert" Grin

I too loathe Madison. I wonder why? It seems innocuous. I don't like American ish names such as Brooke either and know a couple of little ones so it appears to be getting more popular.

OLizzylouofBethlehem · 08/12/2011 20:06

Dragon, yep, Prince Harry has Henry on his birth cert.
Never ever heard him been referred to as Henry though.
From Birth.

I have a list as long as my arm of names that make my teeth itch, some may be quite popular amongst MNers.
But just posting them all feels really mean. If I upset someone (Like if I'd have said I don't like Oliver , which I like actually, and upset Everlong whose GS's name has such meaning).

I think that sometimes names just fit. I would never have called a child Arthur, but I know a delightful boy whose name just fits.
