Marmite names which MNetters don't like..!!

It seems this topic board has loads of MN's 'marmite' names. Loads of threads along the lines off, 'DC would of been' or 'Names you Love.'.

...so I was just wondering, which names don't you like and why?

Just re Harry, apart from small child ones I know Harrys in their 20s, 30s, 80s & would be 100s if not departed. My grandfather & both DP's grandfathers were Harry - and that was on the birth certificate.

tummytickler · 09/12/2011 11:48

Sarge - I do like Bertie, I think it might be the only exception. I do prefer it asa nn for Bertram, but Bertie is fab.

vixsatis · 09/12/2011 12:04

Frenchified spelling, so I loathe Harriette but like Harriet. Amelie is awful but Amelia is pretty.

Can't stand Amy or Amie or Hannah (too breathy!) or anthing double-barrelled: Sally-Anne, Sarah-Jane (or worse, Sara-Jayne) Ellie-Mae etc.

Dislike shortenings as "real" names, so Bertie, Archie, Sally, Ellie etc are all wrong.

Irish names are lovely if the parents have have Irish heritage. If not I think they're a bit pretentious. Likewise French names; and while we're at it, "Fleur" is hideous even if the parents are French and the child will be called either "flirt" or "phlegm".

Plus the usual range of daft made up names.

Worst one in the book when we were choosing was "Gobniht". Means something very pretty in Irish but I think it's pronounced as spelled- would be interested if wrong

Jingle, you've not met my Quentin yet - he's a mischevious 5 year old Smile.

I don't really 'hate' any name but am not very keen on made up spellings.

candytuft63 · 09/12/2011 12:56

Its silly spellings that get my goat more than the name itself. I know a Paditta (Perdita) and a Lillee (Lily).

Makkapakkaakkawakka · 09/12/2011 13:02

I absolutely hate Scarlett, it's a dreadful name and i always feel so sorry for any little girl with that nae. I also have an irrational dislike of Imogen, just sounds so ugly to me.

I also hate this MN obsession with everyone having to have a long version as well as a short version of a name. If you like Katie, call them Katie, it's a perfectly sensible name, they don't need to be Katherine, just in case, their name is their name.

I also hate hate hate Zak, it's the most popular name around here by far and a Zak always has a brother called Sam and a sister called Jessica.

Ninjacat · 09/12/2011 13:26

What others choose to call their children is of no real consequence to me but I did feel a slight pang of pity for the child in the park the other day when her Mum called across the sand pit "Destiny! Get 'ere"

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 13:26

I also don't like short names on BC...I don't know why! It just makes me cringe a little.

DS is Sam and I didn't like Samuel or Samson, but I ended up putting Samuel on the bc. And I like it now just fine. :)

PosiesOfPoinsettia · 09/12/2011 13:27

Not one of my dcs names in the whole thread! Loads of names I hate....Freya and Daniel are two of the most common names that are too dull to say out loud.

scarlettlips · 09/12/2011 13:32

Shock @ Iona!!!

I know an Angel....Urrrrr he's so not, bloody nightmare! I really don't like made up names or silly spellings. I really just understand it, but each to there own Confused

Really dislike "Maisy" it's just such a wishywashy name imo. Sweet when your 3 but when your 43 or 79 just plain odd!

Lola

MamaLazarou · 09/12/2011 14:05

I can't bear Evie - faddy and just one letter away from 'Evil'. And anything strippery - Lola, Tallulah, etc.

I must be alone on here as I actually quite like Destiny. I wouldn't choose it for my child, but I like it on other people.

PrincessScrumpy · 09/12/2011 14:06

Noah - loved it until dd was a toddler and started saying it instead of No in a huffy way!

Mark - a friend of a friend is known as skid, when I asked why I was told "oh, his name is mark... skid mark" Put me off the name for life.

Riley or Ryhlee as the boy at dd's nursery spells it. Generally any name that is spelt incorrectly in order to make it different. Just makes the parents look thick and means the poor child has to spell it to everyone. I worked at a newspaper for a while and came across 11 spellings of Amy!

MamaLazarou · 09/12/2011 14:09

at 'Ryhlee'. Poor kid.

PrincessScrumpy · 09/12/2011 14:15

He's a tough kid violent little thug he can take it! Grin

othersideofchannel · 09/12/2011 15:22

I really don't like the current trend of 'cutesy' names ending in -ie (Alfie, Archie, Bertie, Ellie, Evie etc.). I prefer more solid names personally Smile.

Really do not like Claudia, Gabby\Gabriella, savannah, Amelie and Milly/ Molly type names.
Don't like Sebastian not sure why and always loved William, Oliver etc but find them a bit dull due to over use.

vickyj52 · 09/12/2011 20:10

Also once met a Kilara which I found a bit weird!

phlossie · 09/12/2011 20:19

I loathe Hayden/Jayden/Brayden/Kayden - what's that about?

Also loathe 50s popular names like Colin, Keith, Linda, Norman, Nigel. And I don't get how anyone could hold a beautiful newborn and call him Peter, Steven, Micheal, John, James or any other boring name like that. Or her Joyce, Margot, Susan...

phlossie · 09/12/2011 20:20

And virtue names - Patience, Prudence, Charity, Joy... too much to live up to.

chickydoo · 09/12/2011 22:09

A few more hates.
Lottie
Jessica
Rosie
Anything with Rose in, Lilly Rose etc
Octavia (I know a poor child saddled with this monstrosity)
Gemma

Last 3 done to death around here

Quite like

Berenice
Henrietta
Hermione (even with Harry Potter)

Pascha (a bit too strictly, but still like it, if you happen to be Russian)
