Hi all! Just found out we're having a boy and have whittled our list down to our two favourites, what do you think, Otto or Angus? Smile

Both are lovely. Probably Otto if I had to pick.

peggyblackett · 05/11/2011 08:59

Both lovely, prefer Angus.

Montsti · 05/11/2011 09:02

Congratulations! I prefer Angus, but like Otto too!

lottiegb · 05/11/2011 09:06

Wow, Otto is unusual and makes me think simultaneously of otters and of first world war German generals or royals. Though actually the name coming to mind is Otto von Bismark who was C19th and unified Germany. So, maybe depends on your heritage and surname but it could really work alongside the current generation of names, while being unusual - quite nice.

The only Angus's I've met have been distinctly Scottish, so as above on heritage but it's less playful, more serious, so in a way less versatile.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/11/2011 09:13

lottie, my family background is German and my maiden name is German which we'll use as a middle name if we pick Otto. My husband is ulster-scots and we have an ulster-scots surname. We'll go with an Irish middle name if we pick Angus. Grin

Oh BTW, Otto still sounds good with the Ulster-scots surname!

Angus.

lottiegb · 05/11/2011 09:22

Yes, I'd assumed you'd thought it through and had reasons - just giving you my immediate, uninformed reaction (though secretly pleased you're not both southern English seeking to be different, as I think people will ask an Angus about his Scottish heritage and probably an Otto where that came form - perhaps I'm a bit of an authenticity snob).

Towndon · 05/11/2011 10:50

I prefer Angus.

LaFilleSurLePont · 05/11/2011 11:51

I love both, but I prefer Angus. It's my favourite name.

lottiegb · 05/11/2011 15:48

Otto has tha advantage that it can't really be shortened, or modified easily. I'd vote for Otto.

Grumpla · 05/11/2011 15:57

I love both! Otto has the edge for me though.

Though I'd have contrasting middle names rather than matching if it were up to me Smile

I love the name Otto (reminds me of Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda) and I also love Angus (and Fergus). But we are both Southern Englanders lottiegb and I feel the same way as you about heritage.

Saying that, even though we're English for quite a few generations back, the English are pretty mongrel with Germanic, French, Norwegian, Celtic, Roman and other influences.

Bandwithering · 05/11/2011 22:21

What about Otis? I prefer that.

pepperpeterspotspooed · 05/11/2011 22:36

Angus
(it is DHs name so I may be biased) and he isn't scottish at all

Carlitawantsababy · 05/11/2011 22:49

Thanks everyone for the lovely feedback, nice to know the votes are pretty much split. We may keep both names until he's born and see which one he looks more like ! Grin

Otto is lovely

MadameCastafiore · 06/11/2011 17:08

Otto is my fave name ever!

Carlitawantsababy · 06/11/2011 17:37

Where are you cherry as there were only 100 Ottos named in England and Wales in 2010...fussy I know but I won't want to use it if I'm going to end up meeting loads of others! Thanks.

I prefer Angus. Otto just makes me think of the school bus driver in the Simpsons (sorry).

emmyloo2 · 07/11/2011 06:39

I prefer Angus which is one of my favourite names. Also like Fergus (just as an aside). Otto is great but probably a little bit too out there for me.

nicknamenotinuse · 07/11/2011 06:43

Otto would have been the name for my child if it was a boy. It was a girl! So, in my opinion, Otto definitely!
