Hi all! Just found out we're having a boy and have whittled our list down to our two favourites, what do you think, Otto or Angus? Smile

Not sure if it's the same in the UK, but here Otto bins are the large garbage bins that the garbage trucks collect, so Otto just reminds me of garbage.
Angus is lovely and much more of a classic. You can't go wrong with Angus.

Carlitawantsababy · 07/11/2011 09:37

No bubba! Not the same in UK! Grin

Angus is lovely.

Otto is awful, almost comical, sorry.

bex2011 · 07/11/2011 11:03

I love both. Ds is Gus. I didn't go for Anus as it has too many associations with an ex. Otto Will be on the list if we have another Ds. Not sure i would get it past Dh. I used to have a goldfish called Otto, named after a fish in the book 'a fish out of water', my favourite children's book! We are southern English folk and would be a bit worried about heritage as we have a very Spanish surname.

phlossie · 07/11/2011 15:27

I would think you wouldn't go for Anus for more reasons that an association with an ex, bex2011!!!!

Carlitawantsababy · 07/11/2011 17:09

What a strange thing to say to someone you've never even spoken to sonnie! How rude! Shock

LynetteScavo · 07/11/2011 17:13

They are both totally fabulous names! Congratulations on having such good taste. Grin

I think you should look your baby when he is born see which suits him best.

LaFilleSurLePont · 07/11/2011 17:24

You asked for opinions,OP.That means that people can say that they hate them if they do,that's the point of this forum,to ask for opinions.
Now personally I love both, but Sonnie's view is as valid as anyone's.

LaFilleSurLePont · 07/11/2011 17:24

I can't type today.

iarebaboon · 07/11/2011 17:31

DS 1 was Otto for his first few hours. We then Decided against it as it is terribly German. There isn't anything wrong with that, it's just that we aren't. I love it though and if I was even a bit German I'd go for it

DD2 would have been Augustine if she was a boy so a Gus too

Carlitawantsababy · 07/11/2011 17:44

Grin ooh! I find it very easy, personally, to give my opinion politely! I actually think it is quite funny that some people use this forum topic as an excuse to be rude and am not actually offended!
Anyway, thanks everyone, that's really helpful, as they are so even we will keep both and see which he looks more like. Grin over and out!

We have an Angus. One mn is Patrick, our surname is Irish.

I like Otto too, but no German roots.

sonniebonnie · 07/11/2011 18:44

"What a strange thing to say to someone you've never even spoken to sonnie! How rude!"

The OP has asked for honest opinions about two names she's considering. Personally I dislike the name Otto and think of this very well known comedian when I hear the name: www.morgenweb.de/nachrichten/fotostrecken/detailansicht/50510.html
and so to me the name sounds comical, even ridiculous. But that is of course just my personal opinion - I thought that is what the op was looking for: peoples' honest opinions, no?

rachel234 · 07/11/2011 18:55

Personally I much prefer Angus. Solid strong name. I don't like Otto at all, sorry. Carlita, the whole point of these threads is for people to give their honest opinions. And the OP has not got a child named Otto - on the contrary, she is looking for opinions about two names. Sonnie gave her opinioin about a name, not a person.

If we only said lovely comments about all names, what would be the point of the baby naming section?

LaFilleSurLePont · 07/11/2011 19:06

Carlita is the OP.

Carlitawantsababy · 07/11/2011 19:41

Oh god, I've started something now! Please forget it. Thanks for the help. topic closed

MackerelOfFact · 08/11/2011 09:37

I have an Otto so I'm biased, but I love it.

Not offended by implications that it's comical though, DS2 is the only Otto I know and the name makes me think only of him.

slapmeonthepatio · 08/11/2011 12:20

Names have all sorts of connotations for all people. You like what you like. It shouldn't really matter what people think. If I'd listened to what people thought of our choices, we'd have ended up picking some very plain and traditional (and not in a good way) names.

rachel234 · 08/11/2011 12:59

I agree with slap. We should choose names WE love, not what a random bunch of internet users love. But if the OP does ask for honest opinions, she should welcome them all, good or bad.

slapmeonthepatio · 08/11/2011 14:18

Hoorah someone agrees with me. Doesn't happen very often on MN Grin.

Yes, if you do post on a forum, you should welcome opinions, good or bad. I've always found MN useful for sounding out names (sometimes you miss dodgy initials or names that sound like rude words when put together Blush) I have seen on this topic, that sometimes people are rude when they needn't be. There are ways of saying you're not keen on a name without offending people.

tammytoby · 08/11/2011 21:43

In Germany the name Otto has indeed a comical feel to it, mainly because it is a VERY old fashioned name and because there is a famous comedian named 'Otto'. I can't see it becoming 'cool' for some time there.

AberdeenAngusina · 08/11/2011 22:00

Love Angus!

SJmama · 11/11/2011 12:09

we have an Otto, we love it! It is different and the reaction when people ask his name is amazing!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 11/11/2011 13:23

angus, love it (gus for short)

Pudden · 11/11/2011 14:50
