Nicholas - is it due a comeback?

What do you think of the name Nicholas (although might use the spelling Nicolas Hmm). Me and DP really like it but were wondering whether it is a) very popular or b) may be making a comeback? Our eldest DS has a pretty uncommon name but with a popular nn (he is Leopold nn Leo) so we aren't too fussed about popularity, more the opposite actually and don't want a name associated with the older generation. So what do you think? We also love the nn Nico for it as well and most probably the mn Thibault (DP is french).

love Nicholas although i always associate the name with christmas (i know i'm weird lol). i think it will make a comback. like nico as a nn but prefer the full name.

Nicholas (with an h) is very nice :)

DessieLou · 30/10/2011 16:33

I LOVE Nicholas!!! Go for it! Grin

collegedropout · 30/10/2011 16:37

French DH wants to use spelling without the H as he pronounces it more like nee-ko-la IYSWIM?

It always makes me think of someone not wearing any pants - knicker-less - a bit immature but a boy at my junior school (a long time ago!) used to get teased about his name...I do know quite a few (not a ridiculous amount) but don't think that should matter if you love the name. Btw prefer the spelling Nicolas and love Nico as a nn!

Libra · 30/10/2011 18:16

We have one with the Danish spelling - k not ch. DH is Danish.

And yes, he was born at Christmas.

DeeScent · 30/10/2011 18:21

Absolute love nee-ko-la with the accent, gorgeous.

ShesAStar · 30/10/2011 19:07

I was born in 1978 and had 3 boys named Nicholas in my class, so I'm not sure it will be due for a comeback yet. I haven't met a single baby called Nicholas since I had my son 3 years ago. I like it and love the fact he'd probably be the only one in his year.

TheGhostOfMrsWembley · 30/10/2011 19:09

Love it (for personal reasons).Grin We would have used it for DS had it not seemed ever so slightly narcissistic.

mybootsaremuddy · 30/10/2011 20:36

Lovely name DN is a Nicholas with nn Nicky/Nico he is 6 and we know of one other who is almost 2.

collegedropout · 30/10/2011 21:42

No one thinks it is a middle aged man's name then? That's the only thing I was worried about given that it isn't in the top 100 at the moment that it might have had it's time

You see, not being in the the top one hundred is one of the reasons I would have chosen it.Smile

nooka · 31/10/2011 06:41

I think you will be ahead of the curve. For many people it's probably associated with their own generation (I knew lots of Nicks growing up, but very few now), but it is a lovely classic name so I'm sure it will be back soon enough. I'd say go for it. Especially with Nicko/Nico as a nn.

ImpYCelyn · 31/10/2011 06:56

I love Nicolas - but DH being French is why we didn't go for it, I'm not a fan of the French pronunciation. (But we're struggling with names for DC2 so I might suck it up).

We also had Thibault on our list, love it as well!

ImpYCelyn · 31/10/2011 06:56

Oh and the Nicks I know are late 20s/early 30s, so I think of it as quite a young name.

Ilovemyscrumples · 31/10/2011 15:21

My little brother is called Nicolas, he is 18. I don't think he knows many others kids with the same name. He is now mostly Nic though. Lovely name!

cakeismysaviour · 31/10/2011 15:39

This was on my list for my DS and now that I am (already) asking DP about when we will start trying for DC2, this is top of my list if I have DS2!

jellybeans · 31/10/2011 16:43

I like it but knicker-less would put me off.

Lovely name, lots of variations available. Was V. pop back in my day (1960s) .
Nik/ Nico/ Nicky - all great! And quite unusual nowadays too!

My DS1 is a Nicholas (known as Nick) I know a couple around his age (he's 13) but they're all from a Cypriot/Greek background same as him. I think it's pretty ageless, classic name tbh Smile

CocktailQueen · 01/11/2011 00:00

My 4yo ds is a Nicholas, known as Nic or Nicky, and I love it. Have met NO other Nicholases!! :)

mathanxiety · 01/11/2011 00:22

A fabulous name, one of my favourites. I love the French spelling and pronunciation too (and the Nicolas book series by Goscinny and Sempe).

I also love Nikolai.

Montsti · 01/11/2011 11:26

I know loads of men in their 20's and 30's called Nicholas and about 5 under the age of 5 with a few in between. I don't think it has ever gone away just peaked in the 70's/80's (in the UK)...
