DS5 arrived yesterday at 9:54 pm (two and a half weeks early!) and with his scatty parents no where near choosing a name! After meeting him though we have narrowed it down to two combinations, both of which we love. They are -
Jeremiah Hendrix
Rudy Hendrix
(Hendrix being a middle name not our surname)
As we love them both we really want to get a wider perspective and see what others opinions are - we have already asked the midwife what her favourite is!

Final post:

Topknob: the inner city child rearing comment was in response to your helpful advice on putting a stop to some of my DCs friendships. It is a common term in their whole inner city environment - I had thought that that's how they had picked it up, as they have picked up huge amounts of other teenspeak. Clearly I need to think again, though as this must be a worse indicator than I has appreciated.

manicBM: I don't mean to suggest that the name will influence their behaviour. But some names are harder to live with than others, depending on the connotation of the name and the location. That this name is tricky is all I meant all along, but I realise I've not been expressing myself well tonight.

4madboys · 29/10/2011 21:54

i just think it odd that you care so much what a stranger would call their child that you would 'warn' them off using a name because it has tenuous links to drug/gang culture, very tenuous imo.

i am laughing at the idea of dressing ds4 as a little gangsta, perhaps that would help him feel at home with his name and help him to fit in with his peers to be... Grin

SGJ · 29/10/2011 21:55

The only knowledge I have about the name Rudi is that it's a trampolining move!! (front somersault with 540 twist, for those who are desperate to know, and quite tricky Grin) It's short for Rudolph... and as for connotations, it's better than the name for another trampolining move - the Adi - short for ADOLF!!
Dear OP, Rudi Hendrix sounds fab Smile Congratulations!

4madboys · 29/10/2011 21:57

ooh we have a trampoline, rudi is quite good on it actually, perhaps i should get him training so he can do the 'rudi' move Grin

4madboys · 29/10/2011 22:05

anyway i am off to watch special victims unit, i have noticed that on there an uncanny number of the criminals, rapists/murderers, are called rudi, they are also often black, not sure what the relevance of that is, but we best not go to america or ds4 would be arrested on landing purely for his name Grin

anyway, congratulations op on the birth of your little boy :) i hope we havent scared you off with our discussion of your name choices, and i still say go for Rudi, its a great name, but i am biased! Wink Grin

sevenoften · 29/10/2011 22:05

scarevola - I don't think you've had any trouble expressing yourself. If I were the OP, I would be grateful to have this alternative use of the name pointed out to me. I might choose to use it anyway, but it would be dreadful to ask opinions, and find it had a negative connotation you didn't know of, and which might spoil it for you. As I read your posts, you weren't making any broader point or implication.

thousandDenier · 29/10/2011 22:09

Jeramiah - nn Jerry = Very Very Cool.

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 29/10/2011 22:09

I have a Rudy Hendrix!!!!!!

Well he is Rudy Asa Billy Cassius Hendrix.

Congratulations.

ilovesprouts · 29/10/2011 22:10

i like rudy :)

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 29/10/2011 22:11

Jeremiah.

Rudy sounds like a child taunting someone....who has been rude!

mathanxiety · 29/10/2011 22:12

Jeremiah by a long shot. It is a name that would take him into all walks of life and sound good even as an old man. Apart from everything else already mentioned, Rudi is a more juvenile and casual-sounding name.

Congratulations on your lovely baby boy and hope all is going well.

4madboys · 29/10/2011 22:12

waves at thefirstmrsdeveerie i thought i might see you on here! Grin

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 29/10/2011 22:14

Just read the rest of the thread and am pmsl about the warnings.

I live in dah hood.

Rude boy IS indeed a long used term but it didnt necessarily refer to ganstas and drug runners.

Rude boy was also used as term to describe cheeky/cocky youths, a bit flash maybe but not murderous. It was also used as a term of familiarity ...

Yous a proper rudeboy now?
Whappen Rude boy?

Etc etc

I am sure me lickle Rude bwoy be irie

but thanks for the concern.

stickylittlefingers · 29/10/2011 22:15

My ersatz German grandfather was called Rudi. He was a lovely lovely man, who knew the Black Forest, and all the flora and fauna in it, like the back of his hand. So it has vey very good associations for me and it's a name I love (but don't have boys myself to use it on).

(Just to point out not everyone thinks about gangsters in connection with it. At all!)

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 29/10/2011 22:15

waves back at fourmadboys Grin

4madboys · 29/10/2011 22:18

Grin we should get our 'gangsta boys' together sometime! Grin

and yes it is quite popular in germany and some other eurpean countries, not so much in the uk tho.

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 29/10/2011 22:30

I think that could consitute a gang 4mad
Grin

MegBusset · 29/10/2011 22:32

Be careful though... it's also short for Rudolph as in Hess, you don't want him growing up to be a Nazi do you?!!

4madboys · 29/10/2011 22:35

pmsl megbusset Grin mind my rudi is blonde with blue eyes.... Shock Grin

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 29/10/2011 22:41

I have a dreadful habit of lengthening names. My Rudy gets called Rudolph, Rudolpho, Rudolpholini, etc

It is excellent at Christmas because I can quite legitimately dress him up as a reindeer. In fact I think its the law. He HAS to have his picture taken in a reindeer outfit with the appropriate caption.

I cant wait till he is 18 mwah ha ha..

4madboys · 29/10/2011 22:42

ha ha i may do that this year!! i am currently having a ball dressing up 10mth old dd in tutus! and a spider outfit today Grin

our rudi gets called roodlebug, or doodlebug, or rude dude Shock pretty much anything that rhymes with rudi actually!

goodasgold · 29/10/2011 22:44

megbusset I don't think that discussing names is going to make anybody a fully paid up member of the NAZIs, maybe you should research your facts better.

4madboys · 29/10/2011 22:47

i think she was being sarcastic goodasgold

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 29/10/2011 22:48

My favourite is Rudylicious.

MuddlingThroughItAll · 29/10/2011 22:48

Thanks for all the replies, we live in a city but t'up north, don't think the term rude boy is used up here :o
As for choosing a name, we are no closer what so ever! We adore both and have practised using both and neither stands out over the other. What can we do?!
