Our little man has arrived but he is destined to be nameless!

DS5 arrived yesterday at 9:54 pm (two and a half weeks early!) and with his scatty parents no where near choosing a name! After meeting him though we have narrowed it down to two combinations, both of which we love. They are -
Jeremiah Hendrix
Rudy Hendrix
(Hendrix being a middle name not our surname)
As we love them both we really want to get a wider perspective and see what others opinions are - we have already asked the midwife what her favourite is!

I like Rudy best, but as others have said, why not use both?
Rudy Jeremiah Hendrix surname? Congratulations by the way! X

scarevola · 29/10/2011 16:00

Jem (from Jeremiah).

Rudy is a hoodie name round here; be cautious.

comedaygoday · 29/10/2011 16:21

Jeremiah

cece · 29/10/2011 16:23

Jeremiah

4madboys · 29/10/2011 19:18

a hoody name?!! maybe in america, but in the uk i think its fine, lots of people seem to think it comes from Rudolph and most baby name books list it as a derivitive of that.

GarrottingItLaldy · 29/10/2011 19:23

I like them both but Jeremiah/Jem was the front runner until the similarity to Jimi was pointed out. So, for that reason, has to be Rudy.

And congratulations, by the way Smile

scarevola · 29/10/2011 20:24

It is indeed listed I. Baby book as a diminutive of Rudolf.

But it's also the accepted inner city diminutive of RudeBoy, which is long standing Jamaican slang for criminator drug runner. It's meant criminal in UK since at least the 1980s (remember The Specials "Message to you Rudy" about a drug runner who would wind up in gaol?).

It really is a name to be very careful with if you think you might ever live in a big city or anywhere with a gang culture.

4madboys · 29/10/2011 20:44

yes i am well aware of the song, its where we got the name from! we live in a city and i have met one other toddler rudi and its not been an issue at all, and i dont expect it to be.

scarevola · 29/10/2011 20:52

Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't occur to me that a Rude Boy homage would be intended.

Then again, I'm posting as the mother of teen/pre-teens so the drug/criminal associations are obvious. But I shouldn't have made assumptions about whether that would be welcome or not.

frutilla · 29/10/2011 20:56

Jem.

4madboys · 29/10/2011 20:58

my eldest son is a high school student, almost teen i was and am aware of the 'connotations' as you call them but we like the song, we liked the name, and he calls himself 'rude dude' its cute, we like it!

topknob · 29/10/2011 21:15

oh roflmao @ The HOODY NAME !!! How fucking naive are you I am proper lol !

Rudi is a beautiful name for a child...ignore the stuck up knobs ! They clearly get scared by a child wearing a jumper with a hood !

topknob · 29/10/2011 21:16

I also have a teen ! and tbh they drug connections ARE NOT plainly obvious to me, dunno who your kids hang out with, but I would put a stop to it !

topknob · 29/10/2011 21:16

the not they

scarevola · 29/10/2011 21:22

4madboys: I really am sorry about making assumptions on how people would see the connotations of the name.

Topknob - you misunderstand: I didn't mean it was a name favoured by a particular demographic, that should be avoided because of some weird snobbery. I meant simply that it is a widely used slang term for a criminal, usually a drug runner, and the slang term is particularly associated with inner city gangs.

4madboys · 29/10/2011 21:25

the ONLY place i have seen people mention that connotation of the name is here on mn, which says a lot about mn tbh Hmm

if you google 'meaning of rudi' nothing comes up in the first couple of pages about 'gang culture' at all, so it really isnt that common, but then it isnt a common name which is another of the reasons that we chose it.

he is Rudi Arlo, after Arlo guthrie, woody guthries son. music is hugely important to my dp and that is how we heard of both names, we liked them and importantly agreed on them! but the gang reference is laughable tbh.

scarevola · 29/10/2011 21:25

Sorry topknob - crossed with your last posts.

Thank you for the advice on inner city childrearing. It flings up all sorts of issues.

scarevola · 29/10/2011 21:27

Try googling "rude boy" instead.

4madboys · 29/10/2011 21:27

well he isnt called rude boy Hmm

topknob · 29/10/2011 21:34

Inner city child rearing ?? Whats where you live got to do with it?

manicbmc · 29/10/2011 21:35

Rude boy? Nuts! Grin I thought Rudi was a contraction of Rudiger?

It's a fine name.

I reckon a child's upbringing is much more likely to have a baring on his/her behaviour, than their name is.

scarevola · 29/10/2011 21:36

It's the term from which the diminutive arises. Urban Dictionary and Wiki both contain it.

I won't link, as I think the dissection of my comment has diverted this thread enough. And if two apologies don't suffice, I'm not sure what else I can do.

Except say sorry to OP as well.

EdlessAllenPoe · 29/10/2011 21:37

i am tempted to throw 'Jebediah' into the mix...(or Jed)

4madboys · 29/10/2011 21:37

oh well we all know 'wiki' is the bible of the truth.... 3) Grin

topknob · 29/10/2011 21:42

and Urban dictionary...thats for real after all and not just made up crap [hhmm]
