I've never come across this name, but don't take to it (sorry). I prefer Sappho or Sophia.

ThatsNotMyBabyBelly · 14/10/2011 20:32

Is that pronounced like Sapphire?

It looks like a mispelt Sofia to me sorry.

ThatsNotMyBabyBelly · 14/10/2011 20:32

Ha - Sophia obv Blush

CoteDAzur · 14/10/2011 20:33

You will set her up for a lifetime of "No, not Sophia. Saphia, with an 'a'. Yes, it's a name! Yes, I'm pretty sure!"

CoteDAzur · 14/10/2011 20:34

Actually, Sofia is just as correct a spelling.

sapphic as in lesbians???

I googled "sapphic" just to check I was right. Shock Didn't need to click on any of the results.

You may think again Grin

Fixture · 14/10/2011 20:51

Sophia is nice.

tammytoby · 14/10/2011 21:13

There is a Safia in dd's class and it helps her stand out from the two Sophias and one other Sophie in the same year.

MelinaM · 14/10/2011 21:23

I thought it sounded awfully like Sapphic too cosmoGrin ...so that's a no then!

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 14/10/2011 21:25

It's a friend of our has called their dd this.. I kept waiting for a follow on text to say he had mis-spelled the name but none came Grin

I too thought of sapphic. Surely too much potential for teasing.

IndieNile · 14/10/2011 22:11

It`s an Arabic version of Sophia, usually spelt Safia.

MrsOzz · 14/10/2011 22:35

I like the name. Prefer and know the spelling Safiya though.

Rollon2012 · 14/10/2011 22:41

I like it

PelvicFlAAAAARGHOfSteel · 14/10/2011 22:43

I know a Safiya, it's a lovely name and it suits her.

CoteDAzur · 14/10/2011 22:48

Saphia is not Safiyya, and that is not the Arabic version of Sophia.

Safiyya is the female version of Safi, meaning "pure".

scarlettsmummy2 · 14/10/2011 22:49

I think it sounds like some sort of STI, sorry.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 15/10/2011 03:01

Sapphic for me as well. Immediately thought of Sappho and the Greek island Lesbos.

BeeMyBaby · 15/10/2011 07:13

I wasn't initially that keen on it, but its MILs name (Safia) so we will be calling our DC that in about 7 weeks if its a girl - people that I have divulged the name to in RL have all said its lovely etc (they have not been so generous with all our other name choices) so I think fab!

winkle2 · 16/10/2011 12:47

When I saw the thread name I thought 'beautiful name like Sophia spelt wrong!'

But the more I say it and think about it I actually like it!

I think I would go for the spelling Safia though.

HengshanRoad · 17/10/2011 06:10

Why are you obliged to call your DC after your MIL?

BeeMyBaby · 17/10/2011 13:56

HengshanRoad I'm not obliged, MIL is just one of the nicest people I've ever met and I'd like to name a daughter after her, DD1 is named after my own mother (I just love her name).

Nermalkins · 17/10/2011 17:12

I know a Saphia, she is lovely, She is called Saffie for short

harassedandherbug · 17/10/2011 17:22

My friend's dd is Saffia, nn Saffie and I love it!
