I've never come across this name, but don't take to it (sorry). I prefer Sappho or Sophia.

Is that pronounced like Sapphire?

Actually, Sofia is just as correct a spelling.

Sophia is nice.

There is a Safia in dd's class and it helps her stand out from the two Sophias and one other Sophie in the same year.

I thought it sounded awfully like Sapphic too cosmo ...so that's a no then!

It's a friend of our has called their dd this.. I kept waiting for a follow on text to say he had mis-spelled the name but none came

It`s an Arabic version of Sophia, usually spelt Safia.

I like the name. Prefer and know the spelling Safiya though.

Saphia is not Safiyya, and that is not the Arabic version of Sophia.

Safiyya is the female version of Safi, meaning "pure".

I think it sounds like some sort of STI, sorry.

Sapphic for me as well. Immediately thought of Sappho and the Greek island Lesbos.

I wasn't initially that keen on it, but its MILs name (Safia) so we will be calling our DC that in about 7 weeks if its a girl - people that I have divulged the name to in RL have all said its lovely etc (they have not been so generous with all our other name choices) so I think fab!

When I saw the thread name I thought 'beautiful name like Sophia spelt wrong!'

But the more I say it and think about it I actually like it!

I think I would go for the spelling Safia though.

Why are you obliged to call your DC after your MIL?

HengshanRoad I'm not obliged, MIL is just one of the nicest people I've ever met and I'd like to name a daughter after her, DD1 is named after my own mother (I just love her name).

I know a Saphia, she is lovely, She is called Saffie for short

My friend's dd is Saffia, nn Saffie and I love it!
