Nature names

I've been thinking about names for my as-yet-theoretical dc2 (planning to start ttc in the next few months). Dd is Rowan, I would like to call dc2 after a plant/tree/flower/animal like the big old hippy that I am. For a boy dp likes Ash, have also considered Robin, have no ideas for a girl. Ideally I'd like something normal enough not to stand out at school.

Any ideas?

I like Hazel, Willow, Primrose, Rose, Violet. Good luck with TTC :)

I am due in 5 weeks and really like the name Rowan. A lovely choice.I really like Avery and Autumn for girl's names. If I have a girl I think Autumn is my top choice for middle name.

I like Hazel, that's just gone to the top of my list. Any thoughts for boys? Autumn is pretty too.

Will be following this thread with interest as we're also going to go with nature names. At the mo I'm loving Autumn, Wren and Violet for girls.

greenzebra · 23/09/2011 21:05

Raven is gorgeous, esp for a girl IMO.

Don't get carried away... some of these are distinctly dodgy IMO - Raven, Rock, Beck, Jet,Hunter, Falcon, Fox - Gladiators or superheros come to mind.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 26/09/2011 21:51

we're expecting a girl and have river and autumn on our list

Selks · 26/09/2011 22:02

Ivy, Hazel, Laurel, Bryony, Heath (boy), Fern, Fleur, Iris, Rose, Stella, Flora, Holly.

winkle2 · 26/09/2011 22:32

I had a friend called Holly whose sisters were called coral, Rose and Daisy so we use to discuss nature names for her kids!

What about basil for a boy?!

FrankH · 26/09/2011 23:52

These all are - or in one case were - part of the scientific names of species of ducks:

Penelope, Netta, Dafila, Aythya, Marila, Cairina.

Also birds - but not ducks - Sylvia, Eos, Cissa, Luscinia, Rissa.

Butterflies - Vanessa, Cynthia, Io, Aglaia, Atalanta.

Some of these names originated in other contexts but became attached to these fauna. Others, e.g. Penelope, actually mean the creature referred to.

There are plenty more of these from the animal and plant kingdoms if you look for them.

HoldTouchEngage · 29/09/2011 21:38

Hazel, Flora, Laurel, Coral, also like Eden or Autumn

As for boys? I'm not sure? Someone i once met had an Oakley? And Raven can be used for a boy - my nephew is Raven

thinkingpink · 30/09/2011 09:17

i love nature names! i already have an Autumn Jasmine am 20 weeks now and will hopefully find out today if i'm having a Willow or a Logan. Love Hazel too. Daisy, Lily and Rose are all lovely too but are very popular. I struggled with boys names like Rowan ,River and Raven.

LaTristesse · 30/09/2011 20:24

Linden, Brook, Luna, Estelle...?

MammaInTheMaking · 07/10/2011 10:59

What does everyone think of Sage? It's really growing on me. When i first heard it i thought it was stupid. But it's really starting to appeal to me as a middle name....

minipie · 07/10/2011 11:16

I knew an American Sage once. everyone in the UK used to say "... and Onion" whenever I mentioned him... Middle name would be nice though!

TheBreadstick · 07/10/2011 11:20

Girls - Pixie, Skye, Jasmin, Ocean, Heather, Brooke, Jewel?

Boys - River, Heath, Sonny (pronounced Sunny!)

Loving this thread! Smile

LaTristesse · 07/10/2011 17:00

I like Sage, although it says girl to me...

Also thought of Fern, Rosemary and Sorrel.
