Laurence and Laurie!

The w looks totally wrong to me, especially Lawrie.

Kaekae · 16/09/2011 19:34

Lawrence is a surname, its ours anyway!

Gincognito · 16/09/2011 19:35

Laurence.

(It is also a surname, Kaekae!)

wigglesrock · 16/09/2011 20:30

I much prefer Laurence, I think its a lovely name. I also think as Lawrence as more of a surname.

WorzselMummage · 16/09/2011 20:31

Laurence :)

nodrog · 16/09/2011 20:53

mycatsaysach · 16/09/2011 20:55

MelinaM · 16/09/2011 21:13

Laurence.

Lonnie · 16/09/2011 21:32

Laurence for me as well

MrsHuxtable · 16/09/2011 22:01

I always thought Lawrence was the male version while Laurence is the female one? Might be wrong though but I know many Luxemburgish girl Laurences.

Kyrie · 16/09/2011 22:07

Laurence for a first name is much nicer imo, Lawrence looks like a surname.

rachel234 · 16/09/2011 22:10

Laurence is the female version of Laurent. Just like Florence is the female version of Florent. So to my ears definately a girls name.

Lawrence is a boys name.

mopsyflopsy · 16/09/2011 22:16

Definately Lawrence for a boy. In France Laurence is a girls name, pronounced with the emphasis on the -ence, so Lau-RANSE.

boodleboot · 17/09/2011 15:18

Oooh seems pretty divided....i kind of starting to think that Laurence does look girly prob cos of lauren girls name.....

Its a good boys name tho yes? Unusual without being weird? I find boys names really hard now that ds has my fav name of james and best friend has thre other name i loved in henry....

I like Lawrence but for the short version Laurie looks better although to me Laurie is a girls name in its own right, I know 2. Tough one!

CurwySwide · 18/09/2011 09:11

Laurence and Laurie - love it (for the LW reference too!)

scarlettlips · 18/09/2011 09:23

With a 'W' for me. Laurence is a girls name in France!

emmyloo2 · 18/09/2011 09:33

With a "W" as well for me. Lawrie is a great nn.

As others have said, Laurence is a girl's name in France.

And yes -it's a fab boys name. Not overused and will work on little boy and man.

lchodge · 18/09/2011 13:59

If you did spell it Laurence I think the majority here would think boy, not girl.

CurwySwide · 18/09/2011 16:34

Just to chip in again, isn't Lawrence more of a surname (DH Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia) and Laurence a first name (Laurence Olivier)?

survivingsummer · 18/09/2011 20:11

Here we go again (yawn) - we are in the UK, Laurence is a girls name in FRANCE!!! My DS (Laurence) has never been mistaken for a girl here in the UK. On the rare occasions he may visit France he can worry about it then....

I actually like both spellings of Laurence/Lawrence but because our Laurence is always Laurie he is with a 'U'. Great choice OP and my apologies about the rant!!

LaraandLittleBean · 18/09/2011 20:42

My father was Lawrence, abbreviated to Laurie. My little one will have Laurie as a middle name.

hulabula · 18/09/2011 21:56

Lawrence without a doubt for a boy.

Laurence is a (popular) girls name in French speaking countries and Laurie looks very feminine to me too.

hulabula · 18/09/2011 21:57

"On the rare occasions he may visit France he can worry about it then...."

But if you can worry about it before naming him, even better imo. Who knows where our children may live or work one day?
