Not sure if I've got the balls to use Atticus, though I love it.

Seems such a big name for a little baby!

What could it be shortened to?

I reckon it'd be hard to avoid Attie....

HengshanRoad · 01/09/2011 14:27

Ticky. Cussy.

CosmicMouse · 01/09/2011 16:13

Attic?

Ticky?

Cuss?

Only joking - I know an Atticus. His name isn't shortened. It's a great name!

Greensleeves · 01/09/2011 16:18

Ike?

FellatioNelson · 01/09/2011 16:20

Either be bold and use it as it is, and be determined not to shorten it, or avoid it altogether if you cannot stomach any of the above (and lets face it, who could?)

PorkChopSter · 01/09/2011 16:24

I know of an Atti - I think Atticus is a cool name.
Attic? I used to know a Cuss years ago but that was a surname related nickname.

MelinaM · 01/09/2011 17:55

I absolutely love Atticus, and would go with the full name onlySmile

FleurTing · 02/09/2011 00:39

Cant help wondering if your DS will be as enthusiastic as you about the name Atticus when hes a teenager! I hope you will at least give him a more conventional mn, teens can be very conservative!

bushymcbush · 02/09/2011 00:44

Arti?

GoingToHelenaHandcart · 02/09/2011 00:48

Finch would be the nickname I would go for!

MardyBra · 02/09/2011 00:51

Great character, but sorry I couldn't land a child with Atticus as a name.

The urge to shorten down any name with three or more syllables is almost overwhelming - even if you manage it, most of his friends and probably some of your extended family won't. My friend Nichola absolutely hates being called Nic or Nicky, remembering to say her name in full is a pain. Having said all that, Attie sounds fine to me, which is the most likely shortening, and Atticus is a fantastic full name!

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 02/09/2011 01:16

How about 'that kid with the wierd name'???

Lofty

Justfeckinggoogleit · 02/09/2011 10:04

I wouldn't worry.

It's quite common popular with the tryingtoohardtobemiddleclarssandyouneek set so I'm sure he'll find a nickname for himself.

Try yelling it across a Waitrose car park in your Boden beside your XC90 and see how many other little Atticuss's come running.

seeker · 02/09/2011 10:04

"the kid with the selfish parents"

It's not you who has to have balls to use the name- that's the easy bit! it's your kid who has to have balls to survive being called it.

seeker · 02/09/2011 10:05

But if you're determined, how about "Tom" as a nickname?

blue2711 · 02/09/2011 12:47

Seeker, you're always on name threads condemning people who choose slightly unusual names! I'm not sure your absolute certainty in your point of view is quite right. In my many years of teaching secondary level teenage boys those with individual names generally love them. And those called Tom when there are six others in the class aren't that keen. Teasing / bullying is always focused on appearance / behaviour and not names.

TimeWasting · 02/09/2011 12:52

I absolutely love this name, but for reasons can't use it.

choceyes · 02/09/2011 12:58

Well me being a selfish and also being on of the "tryingtoohardtobemiddleclarssandyouneek" set Hmm named my son Atticus.

No shortening of name, he will be called Atticus in full.

We've only ever had good resposes to his name, people always say they love it, but then we live in a pretty multicultural area and weird names are the norm. And as he will be going to school in the same area I am not worried.
