Too old fashioned?

So, DH and I have some names tentatively picked for first baby (sex unknown at the moment - not sure if we will find out).

Girl:

Josephine
Alice
Kathryn (Kitty - inspired by another thread. I just added it to the list today)

Boy:

Walter (Wally / Walt for short)
Oscar
Edward

We particularly love Walter. But would we be condemning this child to a lifetime of being called "Wally" in a bad way?

Any other suggestions gratefully considered :)

I like Walter, it's more unusual that the other two.

Josephine and Edward are my favourites from your list - lovely classic names.

Alice is OK, but I dislike Kitty (too feline for me).

I like Walter with Walt for short - quite unusual.

Not keen on Oscar, sorry.

Please don't call your kid Walter.

Where's Wally seems to be having a resurgence at the moment - I'd worry more about the jokes if he's wearing stripey clothes than people calling him a Wally.

There's tonnes of Oscars about; that said I like it.

But I like Alice and Edward most from your list.

Walter is a classic, normal name. I like it. Walt is a lovely nickname. Edward (Ed) and Oscar (Ossie) are a little dull in comparison.

Wally would certainly not be as bad as Willy (William) imo .

I like all the names except Walter.
Perhaps he won't be called Wally, you never know, nns change through time. My kids were amazed that Richard could be shortened to Dick.
I know a amn called Walter and he tells everyone his name is Will.

That should be I know a MAN called walter.

Which is a good illustration why you should avoid Walter if it is shortened to Will.
I am not keen on Oscar, but it is better than Wally.
You should go for the king of names - Duncan, or Gavin or Adrian.

I like Josephine best from your girls names. Then Kathryn. Then Alice. Not keen on Kitty as nn.

I like Edward for a boy.

I like Walter with nn Walt, rather than Wally. Oscars are ten-a-penny these days (which annoys me because it had been my favourite name since I was 15 and now I can't use it); Edward is lovely and classic but not very interesting.

I also really like Josephine nn Josie.

Alice and Oscar ARE DELIGHTFUL

You have 2 of my children's names on the list so they are my favourites.

Oscar is lovely, Walter is nice but you have to accept your child might get called Wally.

Kitty is awful but that could be due to it reminding me of that awful woman in x factor.

josephine and edward for me :) both names are gorgeous! i like kitty as a name rather than a nn that wouldve been my first choice ..

Love Oscar and Edward but not Walter. Love Catherine/Kitty and Alice but not Josephine.

I know a little Walter who's nine now and has never been picked on for his name. He is gorgeous and the name suits him.

Some people may not like it, but then at least there wont be many other in the class.

I also like Edward, nn Teddy and Oscar, but think both are quite popular.

I like Walter and Oscar, and I would have a very hard time choosing from your girl's list -- all gorgeous imo.

I love Josephine and Walter. I know a 4 year old Walter nicknamed Walt - it has grown on me. Walter is a lovely choice - yes old fashioned but a classic well known name that isn't overused.

Edward and Oscar on the other hand are very very popular round here.

I really like the name Walter, never crossed my mind before but actually I think it grows well! And whilst I prefer Walt as a nn, I wondered how popular the 'wheres wally' books are these days?

My 12 year old loved them, but my 4 year old has no idea who 'Wally' is,so in another 4 years when the OP's son started school would anyone remember the character? And no one uses the term Wally these days in a derogotory way surely?

I'd say go for Walter! Oscar is very popular where I live, my brothers dog is called Oscar so I have always assiciated it as a pets name (dont mean to offend anyone)! And I think as the Vampire films gained popularity there are a lot of Edwards about,still a lovely name though.

Your girls choices are very pretty, Josephine is my favourite,sure there will be a lot of Kathryn's after the royal wedding earlier this year,and Alice is nice but always reminds me of that horrible song,who the £$%^ is Alice!!!But again not sure its that well known to cause any embarrasement.

Good luck, and go with your gut instinct,you will choose the perfect name when you meet your DS/DD, and wonder why you ever needed a list!

All apart from Walter, got to go with your child being called Wally.. maybe, Walt instead if you are keen on the name?
