I had a thrill of excitement when I saw this in the baby name book today, before that it was an old lady name!
What do you think?
Ooh think I might use it regardless... even if baby is a boy :o
I kid, I kid.
I think :o

I think it's lovely but a lot of people will say Duckworth.

sixpinetrees · 14/08/2011 20:35

There is one in my dds class, I think its really cute. Her real name Veronica which is perfectly respectable.

LetThereBeRock · 14/08/2011 20:49

It's horrid.

faverolles · 14/08/2011 20:56

My ds has a name that is probably the boy equivalent of Vera, we too had that same feeling, even though it wasn't a name we had ever considered.
If that's the name you like, then go for it. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

exoticfruits · 14/08/2011 21:07

Horrible!

littlemissw · 14/08/2011 21:27

Adore! Was at the top of my girl names list before we found out we're having a boy.

coccyx · 14/08/2011 21:29

Duckworth or Lynn??

SnapesOnAPlane · 14/08/2011 21:36

I was thinking Wang, Coccyx :o
Not really, but now that you mention it
Veronica? Is Vera not respectable on it's own? Confused

Horrendous! How about Vita? Smile

Mysecretumbrella · 15/08/2011 17:18

I like it! Was toying with using it myself if DC2 is a girl. There is a family connection so will probably use it as a middle name at least.

tammytoby · 15/08/2011 17:46

Vera is lovely. Works in most languages and sounds feminine. And isn't overused. What is there not to like?

meditrina · 15/08/2011 17:55

Duckworth. Quite a character!

usualsuspect · 15/08/2011 17:59

awful

Catsu · 15/08/2011 18:00

My about to be born dd is going to have vera for her middle name!

Shoutymomma · 15/08/2011 18:13

Oh please, no.

Verahaspurpletwuntypants · 15/08/2011 18:25

I had a great aunt called Vera.

tammytoby · 15/08/2011 18:41

Who/what is Duckworth Hmm? I've been in the UK for 20 years but have never heard of her... And I therefore wonder whether kids will associate the name with her..?

meditrina · 15/08/2011 20:02

<a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=image.guardian.co.uk/sys-images/Arts/Arts_/Pictures/2007/07/23/vera460.jpg&imgrefurl=www.guardian.co.uk/culture/tvandradioblog/2007/jul/23/veraduckworth&h=300&w=460&sz=38&tbnid=kK1J5aY0cdEPrM:&tbnh=83&tbnw=128&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dvera%2Bduckworth%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=vera+duckworth&docid=5tWqpzzQ-KOJAM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=_2tJTrHINcSphAfOzNyeBg&sqi=2&ved=0CEYQ9QEwCA" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">This is Vera Duckworth, this is wiki, and this is a fan site. As one of the characters in the most watched TV programmer for over 30 years, I think you will find an awful lot of people who know the character and they'll be around for a good while yet. Not DD's peers obviously, but the adults around her.

BodyUnknown · 15/08/2011 20:13

I love it. But the baby name book I had said it was old lady and Verity is a better (i.e. more modern) alternative!

hangon · 15/08/2011 20:45

Is that a joke

tammytoby · 15/08/2011 21:14

Thanks meditrina, I still don't recognise her (but don't watch that much tv). As you say, most children today would have no associations like some of you.

I still think it is a lovely sounding name that works well in most languages. And not widely used. So I'd go for it Smile.

SaffronCake · 16/08/2011 13:09

What? How do so many people think it's awful? I think it's brilliant, totally brilliant and I love it.

It can also be short for Verena which is a short e sound at the front (veh-ren-na) whereas Vera is a long e sound (veer-ra).

It's positively fab and anyway Vera Duckworth has been off the telly since 2008, at least 3 years before baby is born. Three years before I was born people were watching Columbo, Runaround and The Good Life. None of which I can name a single character from.

ragged · 16/08/2011 13:23

Thumbs down from me.

pranma · 16/08/2011 14:03

I prefer Verity

reelingintheyears · 16/08/2011 15:38

Are you kidding....Vera is awful.

And Veronica's get called Vronks or Ronnie.
