And what is the general opinion on it?

I don't think my name has increased in popularity significantly since I was born (at the moment it is around the 300-350 mark in the stats) but it is very frequently mentioned on here and seems to be pretty much universally adored on mumsnet :)

Mine is apparently "classic", "sensible", "strong", "feminine" and on the whole well liked by Mumsnet. Which is all very odd because it was stupendously common in the 70's and 80's and so by rights should be as unfashionable as they come.

MetalSian · 06/08/2011 09:54

I thought mine wouldn't have... but I searched and there were 388 threads =O.
And I thought I was maybe slightly unique, although I do know another person with my name.
Can you guess that it is Sian, from my username ;P!

SnoozleDoozle · 06/08/2011 18:42

This intrigued me, so I did a search and found a couple of threads. Mine falls into the category of old fashioned and classic, I was pleasantly surprised to see that most people seem to like it, although they like it's shortened version better. But, the negative comments were totally viscious - if people hate it, they really seem to hate it.

Personally I like it - I hated it as a child, because it was old fashioned. I love it now, because whilst I know loads of women my age (mid 30s) called Karen, Joanne, Nicola, Gillian etc, I have never met anyone else with my name. Not that there is anything wrong with any of the names I have listed - they are perfectly standard names for someone my age, I just used them as an example...

SnoozleDoozle · 06/08/2011 18:44

arrgh, don't let the pedants be on here, I've just realised I put an apostrophe in 'it's' when I shouldn't have......

WanderingSheep · 06/08/2011 20:26

I have seen mine mentioned a few times, it has been called a chavvy and I think that it was on a "names that you don't like but don't know why" thread

It was also mentioned by an OP who was thinking of using the name for her son

I am female but it is the name of a singer who is male

I don't particularly like it but I don't hate it either

Only by tummytickler!!! And she's got adventurous taste in names. Her old lady names are still middle-aged for most people.

I reckon mine will come back when there is a fashion for less frilly names.

mybootsaremuddy · 06/08/2011 22:02

Ive never seen my first or mn on here or ever heard of anyone with either name!! Both my names are Maori.

My names although genuine are very uncommon. My mn is a common word though as it is the name of a nz tree, that is also used as a name!!

ByTheSea · 06/08/2011 22:03

No. I have a very unusual name.

GetOrfMoiSamsungFridgeFreezer · 06/08/2011 22:04

Nooooo

My name is chavscum (Kirsty)

culturevulture · 06/08/2011 22:06

I think I have only seen my own name on here once and can't remember what people said about it but probably that it was a popular 70's name.

takethatlady · 07/08/2011 08:26

Once my name was brought up.

I love my name.

It was universally condemned Grin

Abcinthia · 07/08/2011 09:21

I've seen mine on here a few times, most people seem to like it though they say the person should use Catherine instead and shorten it to Katie (my name) as a nickname. Also there's usually at least one person to say how common it is, that it's boring, too royal wedding etc etc.

I don't care. I love my name.

redexpat · 08/08/2011 07:48

Abcinthia me too! Although I'm a Kate.

It seems to come up as a one syllable middle name quite frequently, also as a classic non girly girl's name. Hurrah! It was the msot popular in 1981 so there were always multiple Kates and Katies. My mother wanted to call me Persephone so really don't mind!

TanteAC · 08/08/2011 13:38

Yes Sad
Irish, and often 'imagine having to go through life spelling your name!'

I like it!

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 08/08/2011 13:46

I haven't checked but I think it's come up once or twice - it's a bit 70s imo. My godawful middle name comes up more often and people either love or hate it (for being girly and a bit try-hard) If I can be bothered I'll go on there and try and persuade the OP not to saddle their poor child with it

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 08/08/2011 13:53

My name was thought really old fashioned when I was a child, everyone had an auntie with my name. It's nearly worked its way back round into Granny chic. It's a classic, but I hated, hated it growing up. I would have preferred a more 'modern,' less dated name, like Helen or Jane. (My 2 best friends)

CLS101 · 08/08/2011 16:33

Not that I have seen!

I actually changed my name (by deed poll) @ 20 years old.

First, Middle and Surname. Not that I had something completely new though!

I had a double barrelled first name a long middle name and a double barrelled surname that now didn't actually contain any of my parents surnames. (My mum married my step dad and my dad 'uses' more than one surname, he wasn't using his real one when he was with my mum.)

The first part of my first name was hardly used by anyone, and when it was first used by someone I didnt know they would always get it wrong. Plus I had a nn from it I would have preferred not to have. So my first name is now just the second part of my old first name.

I completely changed my middle name as I didn't really like it and already answered to a different name by some family members who think I look like someone famous with that name (I do sometimes see that on here).

My surname is now my stepdads. Suits me much more and people always said that I have the traits of a 'S......' rather than traits from my Mum or Dads side, lol!

I do now find that when registering somewhere I have the need to explain my name change!

Phew that took a while to type.

I am happy to give names if people are interested?
