And what is the general opinion on it?

I don't think my name has increased in popularity significantly since I was born (at the moment it is around the 300-350 mark in the stats) but it is very frequently mentioned on here and seems to be pretty much universally adored on mumsnet :)

If I search it, someone puts it in a list of suggestions about twice a year - but no-one ever comments on it, lol

I've never met anyone with my name, so far neither has anyone I've ever met.

whysolate · 04/08/2011 15:48

Mine is, but only when people are all agreeing on a beautiful, classic, english name! Grin

nenevomito · 04/08/2011 15:48

Oh god. Just went and searched for my name to see if it had come up.

Oh yes. Over 500 conversations.

It wasn't good.

I suppose I could take some comfort that it was in the upper class/trying too hard/wanky column rather than in the "Who would call their child anything so stupid" column.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 04/08/2011 15:48

Would very much doubt it. I have met someone in real life with the same name - because I was named after her Grin and another person with it as her middle name but it isn't very common at all.

My shortened form, which I normally use, probably has - although more than likely for a boy Hmm.

zdcgbjm · 04/08/2011 15:49

Mine got a mention as being chavvy once. I promise I'm not Grin

Bunbaker · 04/08/2011 15:49

No, never. I have an very unusual name and wouldn't wish it on anyone. As a result I have an aversion to unusual names that no-one else has heard of and names that have "alternative" spellings.

DorothyGherkins · 04/08/2011 15:49

There were lots of my name around in my time. When I went to Big School, there were six of us used to sit on the school bus together, it got very confusing. Now its never used by itself or even as a second name. Dont know anyone famous with this name. I hope my grandchildren might use it for their offspring in honour of me when I am in my dotage. Never seen it mentioned on here.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 04/08/2011 15:50

babyheave I did the same and the male version of my name was there but not the female version (why it picked up the boy's version and not the girl's version when they are spelt differently I have no idea!)

ZZZenAgain · 04/08/2011 15:51

I think people remember some horrible cow from schooldays who had our names

FjorgynAndHotWater · 04/08/2011 15:54

Mine is still pretty popular as a middle name but too 60s/70s for a first name. I am not plain though Wink

lovinme · 04/08/2011 15:57

no but then it is an unusual name which people can't seem to spell or say and after 28years it still pisses me off that my own family still can't pronounce or spell my name!

Georgimama · 04/08/2011 15:57

Oh God, I have just done a search for my name on baby names topic. Apparently it is a good alternative for Jane if you want a name like Jane but not actually Jane, and someone described it as follows:

I have known loads of Helens, they tend to be somewhat brisk, good at sports and prone to dressing in beige, honest and intelligent though not very creative or imaginative. Mostly kind and good fun.

I wish I hadn't looked now.

CaptainNancy · 04/08/2011 15:59

Aw- Georgie- all the Helens I have known have been really lovely people, a couple more outgoing than others, but universally kind, generous, humourous types.

stardustn · 04/08/2011 16:00

lovinme I know how you feel- the variations of spellings I get on Christmas/birthday cards is fairly amusing :o Close relations know how to pronounce my name but distant ones pretty much always get it wrong

OP posts:
Quenelle · 04/08/2011 16:00

Georgimama that is a very inaccurate description of a Helen.

But I also really like Jane so what do I know.

5inthebed · 04/08/2011 16:01

Nope, mine never comes up.

ZZZenAgain · 04/08/2011 16:01

Helen is a great name.

I'll go and do a search on my name but I am sure there has never been a thread on it

ZZZenAgain · 04/08/2011 16:04

I stand corrected. Have been threads with it, never seen them before though

Yama · 04/08/2011 16:07

Only on the 'Who's got a typically 70's name then?' threads.

Meita · 04/08/2011 16:07

Never. I've never met anyone sharing my name in RL either.

befuzzled · 04/08/2011 16:08

I am like you OP (preen, preen)

argghh · 04/08/2011 16:08

Just had a look through and its mentioned on the 'beautiful classy elegant' name thread - oooo get me!

Its Alexandra by the way

stardustn · 04/08/2011 16:09

Just done a proper search for mine and yep, almost every comment is positive. The only issue mentioned is pronunciation (which I agree with) and one comment that it is 'uppity'. They obviously haven't met me :o

OP posts:
notso · 04/08/2011 16:09

Yes, mine has been popular for ages.
Some people suggest it as a classic,
some people think it is boring,
some people insist on putting an ie at the end of it,
no doubt some people think you can't be a high court judge with it,
and it appears you have to change it if you marry into the royal family.

stardustn · 04/08/2011 16:10

It's Helena btw
