And what is the general opinion on it?

I don't think my name has increased in popularity significantly since I was born (at the moment it is around the 300-350 mark in the stats) but it is very frequently mentioned on here and seems to be pretty much universally adored on mumsnet :)

Oh I like it.I think of Stevie Smith.

KristinaM · 04/08/2011 17:29

Never

I assume because its a very 1960-70 s name. So old enough to be dated but too young to come back in as granny chic

Georgimama · 04/08/2011 18:05

I think we should go back to all girls being called Jane, Mary or Elizabeth and boys being Henry, Thomas or George. Was simpler.

EsmeWeatherwax · 04/08/2011 18:16

I've never seen mine, think it might be the same as bilblio's though...

branstonsandcheese · 04/08/2011 18:58

mrswoodentop I think we have the same name Smile

TillyIpswitch · 04/08/2011 19:50

Mine is one of those names which has a variety of different spellings so that if you added them all up, it'd very probably top the most popular girl's names list.

When I was given it in the 70s it was deeply unfashionable and right after I was born a load of them appeared in the obituaries and my parents thought: 'what the hell have we done?!' Granny chic was not in back then. They even ensured my middle name was simple enough so that if I really, really hated my first name, I could use that instead.

And now you can't move for them. Funny how fashions change - and this is why I'd never say never to the possibility of even the most ghastly name regaining popularity (for the record, my name's not ghastly; it's lovely, but you know what I mean).

baskingseals · 04/08/2011 20:01

mine is being discussed now - it's in the thread title with 2 other names.

funnily enough it's actually coming out first.
i did start a thread asking what people thought of my name
the repsonses weren't particuarly flattering Smile

suzikettles · 04/08/2011 20:03

Very occasionally (it came up the other day actually) and it generally gets either no reaction or a positive one. It's certainly not making any inroads into the top 100 names.

Personally I'd never give a baby girl my name though. It feels very dated to me, but it's fairly unusual and very regional, so I guess for most people it doesn't have the baggage.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 04/08/2011 20:06

Mine comes up once a year or so and the OP is always told that it's 'too seventies'. So maybe one now for DD's grandchildren...

mrswoodentop · 04/08/2011 20:18

Really branston ,begins with a P ,I like it now ,wasn't so keen as a child as everyone thought it was difficult to spell but I think it's quite versatile mow ,It was shortened at school and University and then I went back to the full name when I started work.Have recently gone back to the shortened form a bit ,largely because it is a nightmare to text.

My brother is Julian ,you never hear that on any threads!

bilblio · 04/08/2011 20:26

Oooh I'm intrigued EsmeWeatherwax
Does it also make people think of cartoon elephants and mysterious ships?

I've only ever met one other, we both looked at each other rather gobsmacked we were both so shocked.

branstonsandcheese · 04/08/2011 20:39

Oh, no, my name was described as meh on another thread today then! Coincidence! I quite like my name - think baskingseals might have the same as mine then :)

MynameisnotEarl · 04/08/2011 20:41

Georgiemama mentioned my name.

I've never liked it but am always pleased when it gets favourable comments on here.

wigglesrock · 04/08/2011 20:49

I never noticed mine and then in the past few months its been mentioned a lot more - it was mentioned today in a strong female name thread. I never liked it Grin

rachel234 · 04/08/2011 21:45

Our names will be back in 20-30 years when the next generation are looking for the next underused granny chic type names.

BulletWithAName · 04/08/2011 22:12

Just searched for my name- it's almost universally liked!

Bunbaker · 05/08/2011 08:26

"Oh I like it.I think of Stevie Smith."

Or Steveie Nicks

BikeRunSki · 05/08/2011 08:39

My name comes up about once a fortnight. It is generally well liked, although sometimes "boring".

LunaticIsOnTheGrass · 05/08/2011 12:41

My name is the same as SecretNutellaFix & I think I agree about the classic & underused bit.

Apart from in songs.. there is loads of crap songs using my name in them & I think I've had them all sung at me.

pranma · 05/08/2011 13:14

NO-mine is the name of Julian Clary's dog!!

SecretNutellaFix · 05/08/2011 14:10

Oh yes, lunatic. I hated that. Especially when teachers would hum "how do you solve a problem like..." if I hadn't handed in my homework. So I said stuff it. They thought I was a problem? I bloody well would be. And so I never did any homework at all while I was in secondary school.

LittleWhiteWolf · 05/08/2011 14:15

Yes, my name comes up often enough. I used to hate my name when I was growing up and I was loathe to be one of several in my year which definitely impacted what name I wanted to give to my DD, but I do like it now.
General consensus on MN is that its classic and pretty or at least on threads I've seen.
Meh, I'll even tell you all what it is, its Charlotte.

(DDs name never comes up OTOH)

KenDoddsDadsDog · 05/08/2011 19:22

My name begins with K therefore is apparently a chav name.

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 05/08/2011 20:41

Yes. It tends to divide opinion.

Lots of 'it's beautiful' , lots of 'actually, I hate it.'
