I'm due in Oct, the gender isn't know.

At the moment we're liking Ariadne Beatrice for a girl. What do you think?

I like it. I'm a big fan of Ariadne. (Arrie-ADD-nee)

Ariadne is okay (nn Ari, Addy??? I got stuck) people might struggle with pronoucing it though.

Sorry I can't stand Beatrice - but did punch one once so that might have tainted my view of it, slightly.

But they go together

Ariadne is uber poncy.

Ariadne makes me think of spiders. I'm not quite sure why. It's something to do with the Greek myth and the ball of wool I expect.

Beatrice, otoh, I like very much.

Araignee is French for spider

Gorgeous names and work very well together :)

Arachne was turned into a spider by the goddess Minerva. Ariadne was deserted by Theseus. Two different ladies.

I like it, BTW.

I agree they work well together but I don't like either!

I like them. Also Ariadne was name of character in Inception so some people will have heard of it.

I have an Ariadne - her Dad is Greek and we live on a Greek island. It is a beautiful name and it is never shortened. I have loved the name since reading greek myths as a kid. Even if i didn't have the greek connection I would have still used it. HTH

I like Ariane or Ariana better than Ariadne.

Ariadne is beautiful, not at all poncy!

I like it. Although ....... if it were for my child I'd tweak it slightly.

Ariadne and Beatrice would be great names for sisters, but together in the one name they compete a bit.

i would balance the strength of Ariadne with something much softer. Ariadne Joy
Ariadne Beth
Ariadne Elle
Ariadne Maeve
Ariadne Leigh

Ah I love Ariadne!

Don't particularly like either, and together they are just 'too much' somehow! Ariadne is nicer than Beatrice, but not too keen. Do you like Arianne - similar sound but softer and just flows better IMO.

Even people saying they don't like those names is useful to hear because it helps get a feel for how my potential new daughter would be thought of (or not).

So far no one's saying anything that causes me to do a total U-turn, but I obviously have got o do a bit more reading on the Greek myths before anything is finalised. I would have got round to it eventually, sometime before the registras appointment for sure, but at least with the major pitfall (rejected lover) clearly indicated I know what I am looking FOR when I do read up.

I thought I spoke a reasonable amount of French, but if you'd asked me the French for spider I would have automatically said it was arachne, I would never have looked it up. Having looked it up it is indeed araignee, which is pronounced a bit ambiguously. I'm glad I asked now, thats definately the sort of thing parents should know before deciding.

Thanks MN, you've been very helpful.

Lovely name. Classic and underused. Great choice imo.

Araignee is pronounced 'Arrin-yay', which is quite different, I think.

I like Ariadne (and Beatrice.) Bea is a nice name for a little one.

Love Ariadne, indifferent to Beatrice. However both together make a lovely name.

MerylStrop · 05/08/2011 20:28

Ariadne is beautiful
Beatrice is nice too
But I don't like them together - it's just a bit much somehow
I don't think you need a middle name with Ariadne
