Toby as a girls name

Yeah okay I know. But it was used (a lot) as a girls name inthe 1920s-40s. And on it's own it is both a girls and boys name.

But will they then spend their life getting odd looks or will people just think it's a family nn that gets used by everyone?

But DP and I really like it.

So opinions?????

I say yes! What is wrong with giving a girl a gender ambiguous name?

MrsRhettButler · 29/08/2011 00:59

I knew a girl called Lewis

Not really sure what my point is mind you

"What is wrong with giving a girl a gender ambiguous name?"

Well it's not supposed to be a good thing in general if someone who hasn't met you doesn't know your sex from your name.

Especially if they think they do know and are wrong. At least Taylor could be a boy or a girl. James and Arnold and Roderick and yes, Toby, are all going to be expected to be boys.

Say for example a job application; or a meeting with a new friend; or starting a new job - or school! It's unsettling and not good IMO.

Just checking, topazmortmain- you would of course say the same if the op wanted to call a boy Sophia?

I suspect it is the same old double standards, seeker.
