Toby as a girls name

thecatisdead1 · 27/07/2011 23:12

Yeah okay I know. But it was used (a lot) as a girls name inthe 1920s-40s. And on it's own it is both a girls and boys name.

But will they then spend their life getting odd looks or will people just think it's a family nn that gets used by everyone?

But DP and I really like it.

So opinions?????

No, no, no, just no.

GColdtimer · 31/07/2011 12:53

Why oh why would you do that to a child?

And yes children will find something to tease another child about if they are determined enough but no need to make it easy for them.

ThePathanKhansWoman · 31/07/2011 13:00

I don't like it, i like Tobias for a boy. Toby just makes me think of Toblerones.

PineCones · 25/08/2011 22:29

wasn't nursie's real name Toby? (in Blackadder)
a resounding no..

RueyBoey · 26/08/2011 01:02

I think it would be quiet cool. Yeah - I like it for a girl it's funky.

pictish · 26/08/2011 01:12

No you can't.

Unless you live in LA and you're married to Ashton Kutcher or something, it's a no.

Dylan is passable for a girl if you're into the unisex names.

BustersOfDoom · 26/08/2011 01:13

Nursie in Blackadder was called Bernard!

Toby for a girl always makes me think of Play Misty For Me as that was Clint Eastwood's girlfriend's name. Wouldn't be my choice if I'm honest.

redvelvetpoppy · 26/08/2011 13:17

I love Toby - for a girl or a boy.

There was a female character in the film Down in the Valley, with Edward Norton & Evan Rachel Wood, called October, or Tobe (Toby) for short. I'd go for it - though my DH wouldn't......

Fimbo · 26/08/2011 13:22

No

seeker · 26/08/2011 13:31

Call her Roderick and have done with it.

Discolite · 26/08/2011 18:46

Nooo! Don't do it! It's a weird American trend thing to give girls a boy's name.

Sandalwood · 26/08/2011 21:42

There's a Toby in the book I'm reading just now (Year of the Flood) and it suits her.

toomuchpurple · 27/08/2011 16:18

Well I wouldn't have the balls to do it.

But yeah - go for it, I really like it.

WhiffOfBath · 27/08/2011 16:30

No, no, no.

exoticfruits · 27/08/2011 16:35

Why give her a lifetime of having to explain she had nutty parents?

seeker · 27/08/2011 18:44

When will people realise it's not them that has to have the balls, it' the poor little brat with the stupid name who needs them!

Clary · 27/08/2011 19:03

What's the matter on MN these days? Toby? James? These are girls' names!

It's bad enough with names like Taylor, McKenzie and Drew being gender-neutral. What's next, a boy called Lily? A girl called Alfred?

(I have a gender-neutral name btw and that's one of the things I don't like about it. At least mine is usually a girl).

Clary · 27/08/2011 19:03

gaaaaaah Of course I mean Toby and James are boys' names (sorry Blush)

Velvetbee · 27/08/2011 23:54

My DCs were at school with a girl called October and she was 'Toby' for short. Go for it if you like it.

scottishmummy · 28/08/2011 00:10

ghastly and trying too hard to be unique
but hey if you likey and want the whole hey we are individuals thing.go for it
toby= carvery or jug to me

seeker · 28/08/2011 07:34

Yeah, if you like it go ahead. After all it's what the parents want that matters. If parents want to show off how kookie and unique they are, who cares what effect it will have on the kid?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 28/08/2011 08:14

Why stop at Toby? I've always thought Brian was a nice name for a girl...or Keith...

Abcinthia · 28/08/2011 09:43

I knew a girl called Callum and she really got teased because of her name.

hairylights · 28/08/2011 10:19

No. Absolutely no way. Hideous.

Imnotdarrellrivers · 29/08/2011 00:33

umm no.

far too much teasing material there. But hey if you like it stick it in as a mn at least then they can pretend it doesn't exist.
