our daughter is now 11 days old and we're worried we may have chosen the wrong name. Don't know what to do!
I think We have two options:

  • change it and face short term embarrassment/criticism
  • keep the name as it is, have courage in our convictions and learn to live with the fact that we may have made the wrong decision

So we chose the name Madeleine instead of Miranda. I'm now worried that Madeleine is a bit popular and also it's caused so many problems spelling-wise and it's only been a week. My DH couldn't even remember how to spell it when telling the health visitor! We decided that Madeleine was better for a newborn but when I have my sensible hat on I realise that babies/children grow into their names.

Wwyd? I'm feeling very stressed about it as well as hormonal and exhausted! Please help!

Madeleine is lovely, I don't like Miranda but it sounds like you prefer it. I would change it if you're very unsure. Friends of ours did this recently when their baby was a couple of weeks old and yes it seemed a little strange at first but now most people have forgotten that the baby was called anything else to begin with.

Little Miranda/Madeleine will be nearly five years old.

Ha yes!

This is ancient! How do these threads get resurrected?!

HeteronormativeHaybales · 19/04/2016 11:51
Grin Borh lovely names, whichever she ended up with.
LadyAntonella · 19/04/2016 12:14

It sounds like you both prefer Miranda so I would probably change it now before it becomes too hard to unlearn her name iyswim.

FWIW I like Miranda better too, but they're both nice names.

Grr Zombie thread! How annoying.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 19/04/2016 12:50

I am loath to add to the zombie resurrectiness but it boils my piss. There is a MASSIVE FUCKOFF NOTICE and even a cartoon of a zombie, warning the resurrecter that it's a zombie thread. Why do people do it???? Angry

havalina1 · 20/04/2016 07:36

Bendy, probably because there are no images or warnings visible if you're viewing via the mumsnet app. It appears just like any other thread with current posts.

I do have a lovely image of piss boiling now though.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 20/04/2016 07:58

But how do they end up on an ages old thread anyway? Confused gotta delve pretty deep to find a thread from 5 years ago. Anyway! Really has no effect on my life I was clearly just swept up in the Zombie outrage yesterday 😂

I think you should go with the name you love.

If that requires changing the name then go for it. You could also tell people that she "just isn't a Madeleine" or something, I think most people will understand. You are going to use and hear her name very often and I was told that babyname regrets can be fairly awful.
I don't think that the reaction of other people should matter, what should matter is which name you want for your daughter.

I personally prefer Miranda. It's pretty, plucky and still unusual, I like that it's feminine but not frilly. Plus Miranda means "admirable, wonderful". It's also on my name list, so I am most likely really biased here....

But Madeleine is also sweet & pretty and some people may love the biblical connection.

1horatio · 20/04/2016 09:04

ooops!! Blush
sry! But at least I now realised how much I realy like the name Miranda and bumped it up on my list.... Grin

mrsschu · 20/04/2016 09:23

OMG didn't spot it was a zombie thread and I'm usually good at spotting them Shock! How do they get dug out again?? It is a little bit funny though that some people get soooooo annoyed about zombie threads Smile.

havalina1 · 21/04/2016 12:21

Bendy, Yep I have no idea how the original resurrection occurs either Smile maybe through using Search in the app? I dunno!

elor11 · 21/04/2016 19:05

I remember a friend changed their baby name at over a week. We had a little giggle then that was it. It's def not too late to change.
