Cuthbert?

Too pretentious?

nn Bertie

I'm assuming the Cuthbert, Dibble and Grubb thing is far too old to be remembered by next generation.

It was OH's grandfathers name so its not just random, but I am unconvinced at present, any thoughts?

Not keen. Cuthbert seems to be ringing a bell in my head for more than just the firemen, some kind of weed in a comic strip, not sure which... Not my favourite long version for Bertie anyway (which I am quite fond of as a nn).

Bertram perhaps?

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 23/07/2011 17:46

got it - he was the swot in the Bash Street Kids

MinnieBar · 23/07/2011 17:49

Don't do it to him.

colditz · 23/07/2011 17:52

The Beano. Cuthbert was Dennis's effeminate and weedy arch nemesis.

colditz · 23/07/2011 17:53

Oh no, that was Walter. he was in the Beano somewhere, and not in a good way!

neolara · 23/07/2011 17:53

Bloody hell. That's terrible. Sorry.

allhailtheaubergine · 23/07/2011 17:53

Sounds a bit lispy to me.

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 23/07/2011 17:58

colditz, read my link! he was the Bash Street Kids nemesis, not Dennis the Menace.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 23/07/2011 18:00

cute as a baby, mortifying as a teenager.

PaperBank · 23/07/2011 18:00

It's nice. An old Celtic saint's name.

Other old Celtic saints... Aidan, David, Ciaran, Patrick, Declan, Malachy, Brendan.

LetThereBeRock · 23/07/2011 18:28

Absolutely not,it's dreadful, and Bertie is almost as bad, however as it's a family name then I'd consider it as a middle name.

Wallissimpson · 23/07/2011 18:30

It's a bit Middle Clarss Trying way Too Hard for me, I'm afraid.
Up there with Monty, Caspar and Atticus for Wankeriness.

bagelmonkey · 23/07/2011 18:32

Sorry, no. Please don't.

Thingsfallapart · 23/07/2011 18:34

My DP who is 38 has two friends called Cuthbert, always thought it was an awful name.

birdofthenorth · 23/07/2011 21:55

Well I love it! Reminds me of the lovely old gent in Anne of Green Gables.

A gorgeous name with cut nickname potential.

I don't think it'll seem cruel to a teenager who grows up among Avas, Georges, Rubys & Stanleys.

birdofthenorth · 23/07/2011 21:55

Cute nn potential, not cut!!!

LynetteScavo · 23/07/2011 21:56

I like it, but like Herbert more.

Sl1nkyMalinki · 23/07/2011 21:56

Oh dear god, please don't!

pootlebug · 23/07/2011 21:57

No.

GibberingGinger · 23/07/2011 22:09

I know there is a fad for old fashioned names, but no, this is just horrible. It's like Wilfred or Horace. Sad. Sorry.

TheOriginalBanshee · 23/07/2011 22:14

Awwwwwfulllllll no no and no!

vividgingerchilli · 23/07/2011 22:22

Well it's better than Marmaduke and Aubrey. I can't say much more than that, sorry.

donnie · 23/07/2011 22:23

Terrible. Please give him a name that will not cause him to be bullied remorselessly.
