Lucas, Malachi or Gethin

DC2 is due at the end of October and we have just started thinking about names. We dont know if it will be a boy or a girl but we are pretty certain we know what we will call the baby if its a girl (Erin, just in case your interested).
We like Lucas, Malachi and Gethin for a boy but we cant decide.
What do you think of these 3 names???

Lucas & Malachi are both nice.

Gethin only if you've a Welsh connection, otherwise he will spend his life saying 'No, actually I'm not Welsh'.

MirandaGoshawk · 15/07/2011 18:14

What nn would you give Malachi?

Noleen · 15/07/2011 18:18

Mally is cool. I like Malachi too

BelleEnd · 15/07/2011 18:19

I second Gethin but only if you're Welsh.

corkythecat · 15/07/2011 18:22

I do have a welsh connection, my Dads side of the family is welsh.
If we did we would shorten Malachi, it would be to Mal, which we both quite like too.
Malachi is the favourite at the moment but not sure if its a bit too "out there" for want of a better phrase.
Eyebrows were raised when we told people DS was going to be called Caleb, so many people had never heard of it (the HV actually called him Celeb a few times)

Lucas - prefer Luke as it sounds stronger
Malachi - like, but would choose Mac for nickname. "Mal" is French for bad and is also used in the English language (e.g. malware)
Gethin - don't like

PippiLongBottom · 15/07/2011 19:40

I grew up in Wales. I think Gethin is hideous. It just sounds really ugly. Sorry. Malachi and Lucas are lovely.

Actually I prefer Caleb.

TheMitfordsMaid · 15/07/2011 19:43

Gethin is a great name. I don't like the others at all.

Bandwithering · 15/07/2011 19:46

Malachy or Gethin. Known a few Malachys and they've all been nice.

Gethin is fab. Is it Welsh? I like it. It grew on me in the length of time it took me to click on the link and for it to open.

Lucas is ok but there is no shortage of them. Prefer Marcus.

naturalbaby · 15/07/2011 19:46

I know a couple of Malachai's - one was called Kai when the Rooney's son was born so they gave him the name Malachai so his nn is Kai. anyway... I know loads of Lucas' so would go for Gethin.

Loving Caleb too but that's cause I have a ds called Caleb Grin.

Bandwithering · 15/07/2011 19:47

Re: spelling of Malachy. Seems to usually be spelt with a Y in Ireland. Can I ask is there significance with the i. Malachi. It looks a bit less solid with an i.

hester · 15/07/2011 19:50

What great names - I love Erin and Malachi. Lucas also fine, not so keen on Gethin.

Kyrie · 15/07/2011 19:53

Malachy is Irish and pronouced Mal a key where Malachi is biblical and is Mal a kye, that's my understanding anyway.

I prefer Malachy but Malachi also nice, it fits very well with Caleb imo.

Thanks for all your replies

We like the biblical version Malachi, not a fan of the Irish spelling.
We like biblical boys names hence DS1 being a Caleb.
PaperBank good thought about Mac, hadn't twigged the french translation.
naturalbaby would not shorten to Kai purely because of the Rooney association Grin
bandwithering yes it is welsh.
Malachi is still top of my list at the moment.
Gethin second and Lucas last (there are a few around here)

I always thought Malachy came from Malachai, which is Old Testament?

BR44 · 15/07/2011 21:04

I'm Welsh and really, really don't like Gethin, sorry.

Bandwithering · 15/07/2011 21:07

oops didn't know it was a bible name! I just prefer the spelling that looks right to me, but the name itself is a lovely one.

Funny how it's WELSH people who don't like Gethin! Sounds very Ioan Gruffudish and exotic to me.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/07/2011 21:26

Love Lucas.

englishmummyinwales · 15/07/2011 21:28

What lovely names (she says being slightly biased as DS2 is a Lukas - yes not the most common spelling, see other post - and DS1 was very nearly a Gethin). DH was put off Gethin as Mr Jones had just been in Strictly Come Dancing and thought everyone would think we'd named him after him, I've scarcely heard of him since!

SouthGoingZax · 15/07/2011 21:29

Malachi. Gorgeous.

Rhubarbgarden · 15/07/2011 22:24

Gethin!

Karbea · 15/07/2011 22:26

Lucus, but prefer Luke. Don't like the others, sorry.

Leena78 · 25/07/2011 12:30

If you name him Malachi which is lovely you could nn him Chi (pronounced Kai)
