Both of my Grans were not impressed with DS2's name. Gran1 said of it "I'll never get used to that name' Gran2 said "Where did you get that from?"

He is called Cooper which is quite unusual, but loved by all of our Scottish friends and family, as it sounds Scottish.

Forgot to say that Gran1 also said of DS1's name, whilst slagging off someone up her street who had just named their DS Seamus, "I mean Sam I can get used to, but Seamus!"

Seriously, Sam she can get used to!! I don't think she would like any name tbh. I remember her slagging my cousins names as they were born years back too.

My DD is Jolie...we get many people asking twice. Older people go, hello Julie, younger people go hello jodie.....and we go face palm

When I told my sister we were thinking of calling DS Frederick if he was a boy, she said "I hope you have a girl!" She now agrees that it's absolutely the most perfect name for him!

Only slightly negative comment I've received since he's been born was from my grandma. On meeting him in the hospital and being told his name was Frederick Benjamin, she looked at him for a few seconds, then said "...why don't you call him Benjamin?"

jbells · 03/07/2011 08:59

when my nan came to c me at the hosp.after having dsshe asked wot we had called him.and we sed luca john to which she replied omg wot a horrible name wot did u call him that for. i thought u wete goin to name him jackson. she can b a witch sumtimes she also asked me y i was lying in bed eating crisps the day after my csection telling me i was going to get fat lol

DM, every time she hears DD2's name says the same thing she said the first time I told her "What kind of name is that?"
(dementia is a gift that keeps on giving)
Her name is Lea.

But then I should have known because on hearing I was getting married DM said "why are you doing that?"

My MIL read through our baby name book in which I had dotted names I/we liked. Then she piped up "you can't call a baby Leonard!". Every opportunity after that she mentioned it. My SIL asked for our short list of names (we knew it was a boy) and she laughed out loud at Otto...made no attempt to conceal how funny she found it. If MIL had hung around long enough she would have found out that DH did not like Leonard at all. If I had my way I would have had Wilfred, Leonard, Gabriel etc. However, we settled on Solomon (which I love) and Sol suits him to a tee! No negative comments...only a few toilet humour jokes from my brother a-Sol!

A cousin and his wife announced the (unusual) name of their first child to my uncle, who said, 'But X is not a family name' -- cousin replied, 'well it is now'.

HavePatience · 05/07/2011 20:39

Math Grin that is a brilliant response.

lisad123 · 06/07/2011 09:17

Actually, I have to say I agree with some of these reactions (even if they are rude)

Ziggimajiggi · 07/07/2011 13:23

Not actually had the LO yet, but my MIL asked what we were going to call her granchild - I know, not a good start -

She literally bellowed NOOOOOOO at my favoutirte girls name, Aurora :(

Ziggimajiggi · 07/07/2011 13:23

Ahem - favourite.

doggus · 08/07/2011 14:56

Ds is called Arthur - woman in House of Fraser reacted with a look of incredulity, then said 'Is he named after his grandpa??'.
