40+1 with DC2. If a boy he will be Barnaby, so thats ok. We had decided on Susannah for a girl, to be known as Sukie. However, as soon as I told someone this I had doubts (and not because of their reaction). I am not sure that I don't think Susannah is a bit meh, though i love Sukie. DH won't agree (and I think he is right) to Sukie on bc. This is keeping me awake at night! Maybe there is another name Sukie can be nn for?

I also like:
Clementine
Josephine
Emmeline (DH not convinced though)
Adele

Any thoughts or other suggestions please? Thank you!

Lana is best. DD1 is Lana!

DD2 is Zanna, which can be a nn of Susannah (not DD2's full name though).

I do like Harriet but DH doesn't; I think its lovely.

Do I mean Rowan? Or is that masculine version?

Going to bed now, maybe baby will be here by morning (I think that every night).

Josephine, with Sephy or Jossie (nicer than Josie imo) as a nn.

(I still like Sukie though, just don't tell any of the haters out there!)

I like the name Rowena (don't watch the X Factor though)

Susannah is lovely, classic underused and I just love the sound and feel as you say it. (this may sound odd but sone names I just don't like saying or the feel of the sound-Joel and Mimi are examples).

Sukie is awful though. Very cutsie and very drippy.

Clementine is God awful! The thought of naming your child after a fruit... you might as well call a child Papaya...plus all the nicknames

Orange Juice
Clammy Clemmy
Phelgmy Clemmy

Just No.

I really like Lana and also Lara.

Caspar and Josephine or Caspar and Susannah just sound right together. Can't explain it, they just do.

oh and chortle at the idea of a ginger Clementine Grin Hideous name.

oohhh, gave Dh a list and a threatening look, and we have a new shortlsit:

Harriet (Hattie)
Lana
Susannah (Sukie)
Finley

I think we both like Finley, and Hattie has thrown a spanner in the works as I thought he hated it but seems not. Could this be (nearly) a decision?? Bet you lot undo it in no time....

Not really that easily influenced btw, but keep 'em coming. With DS we thought of a name and that was that. I have never understood naming dilemas until now.

Emmeline... Unless you live near me as I'm bagsying it for any potential DD2!!

My order of preference on your latest shortlist...

Harriet (Hattie)
Lana
Susannah (Sukie)
Finley

Just the way you listed them!

I'm sure most girls with boys' names carry them off beautifully. And truth be told I'm not that bothered (although mildly concerned that giving a girl a "strong" name is often equated with making her sound like a boy) what other people do except when their mothers turn up on message boards complaining that (would you believe it...) other people assume that little Derek is a boy.

But Finley and Finlay are boys' names both very popular at the moment -- if you combine the two spellings they are (on 2009 figures) hovering just outside the top 20, just below Archie and Lewis and just above Alexander and Oscar. So perhaps I should rephrase to "might as well call her Oscar". That doesn't necessarily mean that it's a bad thing or that she won't be able to carry it off beautifully, but you might as well call her Oscar or Archie.

Grin and it's a popular one too Grin I'm not a harping banshee that gets annoyed about it and it is her middle name that she is known by, she has a very girly first name for forms/official business etc If she chooses to use that later in life she's welcome to. We gave all 3 of our girls 3 names for the sake of choice Smile

Can I just add - josephine nn Josie = josie grosie - kids can be cruel.

My name book says Finlay is a boy's name, and an alternative spelling is Finley; for a girl

I don't get all this kids can be crue Josie-grosie'

I have been a parent 19 years and never yet come across it

Alice- Phallus
Zack- Bum crack
Millie- Willy

You could think of an insult for every name if you tried. if someone said something to my child and it was reported home it would get short shrift and the child would see how dumb it really is....

i really think its a misnomer

Yep, 'Josie-grosie' struck me as pretty random too. When we were naming DD DP used to infuriate me by coming up with the most bizarre negative associations. Grrr.

Report
mrsjohnsimm · 25/06/2011 21:31

Josie-Grossie was in that film with Drew Barrymore (note huge specificity there), which is why I think it keeps getting dragged up on Josie threads.

Report
wigglesrock · 25/06/2011 21:33

Josie - grossie is used in a Drew Barrymore film - apparently Lana is Victoria Beckhams' name of choice for new baby Lana is lovely, but I really Susannah, not a fan of Harriet. You have my sympathy, I have 3 girls and got names quite quickly but the thought of picking a boys name filled me with dread Grin
